On behalf of the Southern Scholarship Committee, I am very excited to announce our 2024 Ethel Carlisle Southern Scholarship award winners. Before we get to our lucky recipients, some history and information about the scholarship.
The Ethel Carlisle Southern Scholarship was established in 1985 by her husband, J. Albert Southern, and their children, Tom and Janet Southern Huskey and John L. Southern, in recognition of her service as a librarian at Greenville Woman’s College. Mrs. Southern received her B.A. degree from Greenville Woman’s College and an M.S. in Library Science from Pratt School of Library Science in New York. She worked at a number of libraries including the New York Public Library, Samford University, Greenville Woman’s College and Furman University. She also served as an elementary school librarian for the Greenville County School District.
The scholarship is given annually to a senior or a Furman graduate who has been accepted into, or is enrolled in, an American Library Association accredited graduate program. Renewable once, but preference is given to new recipients. Applications are accepted in the spring semester.
Our first scholarship recipient is Tess Kamody. She graduated from Furman in 2019 and double majored in Theatre Arts and Communication Studies. Tess also worked as a student assistant in the library during her time at Furman. She’s been interested in librarianship from a young age and often answered “librarian” when asked what she wanted to be when she grew up. Tess is enrolled in the Master of Library and Information Science program at University of South Carolina.
Allison Hall is our next recipient. She graduated from Furman in 2023 with a degree in Elementary Education and became interested in librarianship through an experience in one of her classes where she visited a school library. Allison is currently enrolled in the MLIS program at University of South Carolina with a concentration in School Library Media.
Our third recipient is Elizabeth Sanford, a previous scholarship winner. She graduated from Furman in 2023 with a Masters in Teaching. Elizabeth worked in the library as our Weekend Circulation Supervisor while she was studying and decided to pursue librarianship through her experience and relationships built here! She is enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Information and Library Science.
A huge congratulations to our scholarship recipients! I am confident they will positively impact the profession and individuals they meet.
