African American Communities –
Pamphlets, photos, postcards.
Political cartoons, illustrations, maps.
Scrap books, legal documents, ephemera and more.
This collection, albeit somewhat small, contains a fascinating variety of primary source documents evidencing race relations across social, political, cultural, and religious arenas.
Examining multiple aspects of the lives of African Americans through the lens of community, it focuses predominantly on Atlanta, Chicago, New York, and myriad towns and cities in North Carolina. It includes both audio and video of oral histories and images of objects that can be rotated 360 degrees, giving users the sense of being present in the stories as they are told.
Topics covered include racism, discrimination, desegregation, urban renewal and housing, civil rights movements and protests, community integration, and expressions of a unique African American culture conveyed through the work of artists, writers, actors and musicians.
The “My Archive” feature allows users to save searches, images, documents, and more into “scrapbooks” that may then be viewed as a slideshow or exported as a pdf.
