The Furman University Libraries are offering two new database trials. African American Newspapers, Series 2 and Afro-Americana Imprints, 1535-1922: From the Library Company of Philadelphia will be available until Wednesday, March 1, 2017.
African American Newspapers, Series 2: 1835-1956 African American Newspapers, Series 2, 1835-1956 complements and expands on African American Newspapers, Series 1 (available from the Furman University All Databases Page). Published in 22 states and the District of Columbia, the more than 75 newly available newspapers in Series 2 increase access to primary sources for researchers across African and African American studies; political science; ethnic studies; diaspora studies; women’s studies; and cultural, literary and social history. Afro-Americana Imprints. 1535-1922 Created from the Library Company’s Afro-Americana Collection, this resource provides researchers with more than 12,000 printed works spanning nearly 400 years, from the early 16th to the early 20th century. Subjects covered include the West’s discovery and exploitation of Africa; the rise of slavery in the New World along with the growth and success of abolitionist movements; the development of racial thought and racism; descriptions of African American life—slave and free—throughout the Americas; and slavery and race in fiction and drama. Also featured are printed works of African American individuals and organizations. These essential books, pamphlets and broadsides, including many lesser-known imprints, hold an unparalleled record of African American history, literature and culture.
