WHERE Johns Hall 101

The Syrian Refugee Crisis is one of the biggest humanitarian and refugee crises of our time, with over 4.8 million Syrian residents fleeing violence in their homeland and seeking refuge and safety elsewhere. This lecture is part of the Global Refugee Crisis lecture series that focuses on the historical and religious context of such an event, as well as how organizations such as NGOS or local communities respond. Dr. Akan Malici will introduce and provide a historical context for the Syrian Refugee crisis for the first 20 minutes of this event, followed by a 30-minute address by Ms. Roya Naderi of the Karam Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides innovative education, entrepreneurial development, and community-driven aid for Syrian refugees. Ms. Naderi will focus on how Non-profit and Non-governmental organizations, like Karam foundation, respond to the crisis. Major topics include what does on-the-ground assistance in Syrian look like, what are NGOs doing in the United States to help with the refugees, etc. 10 minutes will be reserved for Q and A from the audience. Such an event will engage students in a spectrum of ideas, bringing their attention to the other side of the world through an understanding of the origin and the current development of such a global crisis.
