Special Collections & Archives has had several splendid new arrivals just in the past few weeks. Please stop by Special Collections on Thursday, September 17, anytime between 9 and 5 to have a look. The following items will be out for casual viewing and examination in the Simms Research Room:
- The remarkable Pennyroyal Caxton Bible, which just arrived yesterday. This is one of the most notable and elaborate books published in the past 25 years. (For an image of the donor, look for the portrait of King Solomon in I Kings!)
- The 1772 Morgan Edwards manuscript, Materials Towards A History of the Baptists in the Provinces of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina & Georgia, which just came back last week from having major conservation work done to it, and is much more usable now.
- The Kate Amanda DuPre autograph album, ca. 1869-1871, which just arrived today. Kate duPre was a student at the Greenville Woman’s College, and this autograph album/commonplace book is now our earliest student album or scrapbook predecessor.
- The Gordon Poteat ’10 photograph album, ca. 1915-1920. Poteat was the son of Furman President Edwin McNeal Poteat. He and his three brothers all graduated from Furman. The photo album has some images from his student days and primarily reflects his mission work in China in the years following his graduation. (For extra credit, find the gross anatomy photo.)
