The South Carolina Baptist Historical Collection at Furman University is a comprehensive archives that documents individuals, churches, and associations in South Carolina Baptist history. Located in Greenville, SC, it is housed in the Special Collections and Archives Department of the James B. Duke Library.
Although Furman University and the South Carolina Baptist Convention separated in 1992, the South Carolina Baptist Historical Collection was still considered the official repository of the convention. This status changed a decade later. In 2002, the Convention decided to maintain its own organizational records and Furman continued to house records pertaining to individual churces, associations and individuals. Currently, the collection contains the records of over 500 individual South Carolina Baptist churches, numerous published books as well as church histories, congregational records, associational minutes, biographical materials, newsletters, hymnals, and sermons.
Special Collections and Archives is open Monday through Friday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. We also observe university holidays. Please call us at (864) 294-2194 or email Special Collections (specialcollections@furman.edu) to schedule a visit. We are a small department and we want to ensure that we have staff and materials available to meet your needs. Plus it will save you time! The department is located on the second floor of the James B. Duke Library.
