Government Document Deselection

The Library is assessing our U.S. Government Documents collection. This collection consists primarily of documents we have received as a participant in the Federal Depository Library Program. These resources cover a broad range of subjects and include publications from agencies such as the State Department, Congress and the Department of the Interior.  U.S. Government Document publications are increasingly available online. The goal of this project is to:

  • decrease redundancy (print/online)
  • make those documents not available online more accessible and discoverable
  • maintain a collection that supports student and faculty research with appropriate format and context

Our librarians have already examined the documents closely and selected candidates for deselection according to the following criteria:

  • online availability
  • currency, based upon historical value and context
  • format
  • support of curricular needs
  • local availability

The candidates for withdrawal will be available for evaluation by Furman faculty, staff and students until February 28, on the mobile shelving in the reference area of the Duke Library. If you wish to retain one of these candidates please move it to the cart marked “retain” or send an email to caroline.mills1689@furman.edu listing the title(s) to be kept.

Government Documents to be retained are relocated to the Lower Level of the Duke Library on the mobile shelving. You can also find a list of the candidates and other criteria for the project and directions to the collections at: http://libguides.furman.edu/deselection_govdocs.

We appreciate your help in making sure our collection remains useful to you and our students!  If you have any additional questions please email Caroline Mills (caroline.mills1689@furman.edu) or call 864.294.2264.
