East German government closed the border between the east and west sectors of Berlin with barbed wire and guards on august 13th in 1961. Later, the wire would be replaced with a concrete wall. Telephone and postal services were interrupted and later a concrete wall was built to strengthen the barrier between official crossing points. Dismantling of the wall began November 9th, 1989.
