Opps, we almost forgot…October is National Archives month! It’s time to celebrate the important role archives play in documenting history for future generations. Furman’s Special Collections and Archives is located on the second floor of the library. This department of the library contains the unique, the unusual, and the unexpected. For example, their collection includes Medieval manuscripts form the 13th century, an example of cuneiform 3,000 years old, historic maps, the oldest printed book in the library, and the first Furman yearbook printed in 1901. Strengths of the collection include Furman University history, South Carolina Baptist history, South Carolina poetry, travel literature and the Culinary Americana Collection. Additionally, Special Collections and Archives offer class instruction, personal research sessions and sponsor numerous exhibits throughout the year. So pay them a visit and explore the archives. There’s sure to be something of interest to everyone! Special Collections and Archives is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. They can also be reached by phone: (864) 294-2194 or via email: specialcollections@furman.edu
