In just a few days, the 2012 Olympic Games will begin in London. We all know the Olympics originated in ancient Greece. But beyond that, how much do you really know about the Olympics? If you’re interested in learning more, visit the Library’s display highlighting books about the Games.
Did you know that Furman has quite a few connections to the Olympic Games? Here’s a list of Furman University alumni, faculty, and staff that competed or participated in the Games over the years:
Angel Martino (’90) – Competed in two Summer Olympic Games (1992 Barcelona Games and 1996 Atlanta Games) winning 3 gold medals and 3 bronze medals for the 400-meter freestyle and the 400-meter medley relay.
Silas Pearman III – Health Sciences faculty member, Torchbearer for the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games
Jay Bocook – Music Department faculty member, composer of music for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games opening ceremonies
David Hugh Segal (’63) – Competed as a member of Great Britain’s track team in the 1960 Rome Summer Olympics where he won the bronze medal for the 4 x 100 meter relay.
Adam Fox and Nikki Aills – Bell Tower Catering chefs who cooked for the athletes at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.
Kelly Jones – Furman’s Head Tennis Coach, competed as a member of the U.S. tennis team in the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympic Games.
Robert Gary – Furman’s Head Cross Country/Track & Field Coach, two-time Olympian (1996 Atlanta Games and 2004 Athens Games) in the 3000m stepplechase.
Erika Shaver (’14) – Competed in the 2012 – 20K Olympic Trials for Women’s Race Walk.
