There are some laws that seem really annoying. Come on, admit it: you secretly hope that law about using a cell phone and driving isn’t passed in South Carolina. I mean, yeah, it’s dangerous, you say, but it’s one of those necessary evils of the busy lifestyle…right?

If you think some laws passed these days are strange, you might be interested to find how seriously bizarre some state laws of the the past were. Ever consider betting on elections, challenging someone to a duel, or enticing an alligator with food? Well, regardless of if you actually have considered any of these acts (let’s not talk about it), these are just a few of the crazy, obscure or outdated laws you can find by cracking open an interesting volume of the Code of Laws of South Carolina.
You can see more of these outlandish state laws at the display in the Government Documents collection. Created by Laura Baines, Outreach Assistant, the display is an informative doorway to the Code of Laws of South Carolina.
So, whether you’re looking for an intriguing topic for a project or paper or you’re just browsing for pleasure, check out the Code of Laws of South Carolina display in the SC Documents Collection in Government Documents, which is to the right as you enter the library.
And don’t forget – if need help finding something, need searching advice, or need ideas for that research paper, come to the Research Help desk and ask a librarian!
