Welcome to the Learning Community Cluster 1

The Learning Community Cluster 1 (LCC1) aims to transform the introductory STEM experience through three coordinated projects: faculty development, student engagement and agency, and curricular change.

The premise is that each of these is a critical aspect of inclusive excellence in improving the sense of belonging and student success in STEM.

However, it is recognized that one size does not fit all when it comes to methods for achieving inclusive excellence. Each institution will explore, develop, and implement a variety of methods to support these three projects. The LCC will foster collaborative efforts to further develop, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of the suite of methods, broadening the scope of the project by evaluating interventions in different contexts.

The LCC1 comprises these 15 institutions of higher learning:

  • California State University-Stanislaus
  • Dalton State College
  • Empire State University
  • Fordham University
  • Franklin & Marshall College
  • Furman University
  • Gannon University
  • Haverford College
  • Illinois State University
  • Middlebury College
  • Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
  • Trinity University
  • Universidad Ana G. Mendez-Cupey Campus
  • University of California-Riverside
  • University of California-Santa Cruz

Challenge: How can we make the content of the introductory science experience more inclusive?

“Research shows that a group with diverse backgrounds and perspectives is better able to solve difficult problems than even the most accomplished individuals.”

Susan Musante,
HHMI Inclusive Excellence 3 Program Officer
