Phase 1 (September 2020-January 2021): Recruitment
During the recruitment phase:
- CREATE grant team members will identify our “Train the Trainer” experts comprised of institutional alumni, ACS colleagues, and nationally-recognized experts.
- CREATE grant team leads will identify 2-3 faculty and staff colleagues at their institutions to participate in train-the-trainer workshops to prepare to facilitate their own campus dialogues and workshops. The CREATE grant team already has leads on who these colleagues might be.
- CREATE grant team members will collaborate with campus institutional research colleagues to ensure they are aware of the project and its outcomes.
- CREATE grant team members will build the pre-post learning survey for inclusion in registration and follow-up/reflection surveys.
- CREATE grant team members will secure Institutional Review Board funding to be able to report outcomes to the ACS (and more broadly, as appropriate).
We propose a five-module approach that addresses micro (individual), meso (department or unit) and macro (institution) levels of racial inequity.
Potential Module Topics:
Module 1: Tools for Developing Cultural Proficiency (Micro Level)
Module 2: Structural Racism in the Higher Ed Context (Macro Level)
Module 3: Implicit Bias and its Department-Level Expression (Meso Level)
Module 4: Microaggressions: Recognizing and Redirecting (Micro Level)
Module 5: Creating Anti-Racist Environments (Macro, Meso, Individual)
It can be a challenge for participants in professional development programs to theorize action steps regarding what they have learned over time. For that reason, the final module, “Creating Anti-Racist Environments,” is designed to help people consider the spaces they most frequently inhabit (the classroom, unit meetings, athletic team practices, or other campus events). The module’s goal, after identifying an equity gap or structural impediment to equality in that space, involves creating an action plan to make these spaces more equitable and inclusive.
