We often hear from you regarding your appreciation for the learning experience provided at OLLI. One of the best ways to show that appreciation is to avoid class disruptions. Arriving late or getting up during a lecture is distracting to both the instructor and fellow classmates. Emergencies are unavoidable; however please plan to come to class prior to its start and stay until the break. Also, while we know that you might be eager to “find a place” in your class, please do not go into the class meeting before in order to do so. Thank you for your help in creating an environment in which our instructors and students can get the most of out of the time together!

OLLI’s Social Committee has some fun social events planned this fall! Go ahead and mark your calendar.
Let’s Play Bunco! Join in at the Herring Center on Fri, Oct 25, 2-4 p.m. for bunco, treat style snacks, wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages, along with plenty of laughter! You may even win a prize! The winner of the 1st Annual OLLI Carved and Decorated Pumpkin Contest will be announced at the Bunco event. So get your creativity flowing to design and enter your pumpkin (real or faux) on Mon, Oct 21, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Manly Lobby! Voting will begin on Tues, Oct 22 to conclude Fri, Oct 25, 2 p.m. and ALL OLLI members are encouraged to vote (one vote per member, please) Prizes will be awarded to the two winning entries.

Help a Furman student! OLLI members have worked with Dr. Michelle Horhota, Associate Dean for Mentoring and Advising, to develop a mentoring program for Furman students. The initial test was very successful for students and mentors! We are ready to expand the program with your help. Your experiences in careers, travel, and college majors are helpful to students who are making important life decisions. If you would like to serve as a mentor, email Nancy. Time commitment is minimal, with long-lasting benefits !

Snippet from Sally…Greetings from Denver! I’ve been reading about the Denver OLLI which is one of the 124 OLLI programs found at colleges from Maine to Hawaii and Alaska. How different and yet the same! At Denver, as at Furman, members come from diverse locations and professions and share a desire to stay intellectually active. However, we have our beautiful Herring Center and in Denver some classes are taught on campus while others are conducted at four offsite church locations. Aren’t we lucky here in Greenville?!?!?
