OLLI NOTES September 20, 2019
The OLLI Office is open 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Fridays.

Today, September 20, is the last day to drop classes and receive a refund. If you drop a class and switch to another, there is no fee. If you drop a class without replacing it, there is a $10 processing fee.

The Travel Committee needs your input! Did you know that more than 15 OLLI members have committed themselves to researching and planning wonderful trips for OLLI members to enjoy? The OLLI Travel Committee is looking at trips ranging from day trips to 10-day international trips. Your feedback is needed to help determine what trips to explore and offer for OLLI members to enjoy. If you are interested in traveling with OLLI, please take 5 minutes and complete this survey. We can’t wait to get going!

Callout for Transcontinental Railroad Class Winter Term 2020 Instructor, Matt Hermes is interested in speaking to any OLLI member who has a family history which includes the railroad or U.S. homestead/land grant acts and would be willing to contribute stories that may be included in the class. We hope you enjoyed the opportunity to examine the rise in populist nationalism in the U.S. and globally. Celebrate National Spinning and Weaving Week! The Spin Your Own Yarn SIG is planning an event at the Travelers Rest’s Gazebo on Friday, Oct 11th, Noon -3 p.m. The event will include displaying of the members’ works, while also demonstrating weaving and spinning.

Congratulations to OLLI Members, Frank Erk, Linda Hosek, Brenda Hill, Ali van den Broek, and Gordon Dohm, who all had art pieces accepted in the Inaugural Juried Artshow at West Main Artists Co-op, Spartanburg. This show opens Sept 21 at 6:00 p.m. Visit the website HERE for information.

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?
Furman alumnus Chuck Dillard, professor of collaborative piano at Portland State University and mezzo-soprano Page Stephens will present a recital of vocal music on Wed, Sept 25 at 8 p.m. in Daniel Recital Hall. The program features a new song cycle, The White Album, by Furman composer Mark Kilstofte. Admission is FREE. A terrific opportunity for fans of music and/or poetry, whether French or American!

Celebrate Dick Riley and the 20th Anniversary of the Riley Institute! Join in on October 3, 5:30 p.m. in Younts Conference Center for a celebration of Dick Riley (free admission), followed by a party on Cherrydale Lawn to celebrate the 20th anniversary including a BBQ and oyster roast with music from the legendary Mac Arnold & Plate Full O’Blues ($60 per person). Fall for Greenville is coming October 10-13. Furman is asking for volunteers to help out in the Furman tent. Volunteers would work a minimum of 2 hours and will receive a sheet of meal tickets for the festival. Wear your purple!
