OLLI NOTES August 23, 2019
The OLLI Office is open 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Fridays.

Fall registration continues! Please refer to your confirmation e-mail and note the “class status” for the courses for which you registered (registered, registered not paid, waitlisted). For anyone showing a registered not paid status, you are registered for the course and just need to pay for it. You can make payments through your online account (credit card) or in the office (cash or check).

The 2019-2020 parking stickers have arrived! Furman University Police requires that all OLLI members purchase a parking sticker so that the cars are registered. This helps ensure your safety and security while you are on campus. Stickers are available in the OLLI office for $10 (check or cash only, please). You will need to complete a form with name, address, driver’s license number, make, model, and year of your car, and the tag number. Forms are available in the office, or you can print one in advance. Questions? Contact Alise Brown.

Are you an OLLI Member who has a current lifeguard certificate? OLLI is always looking for certified lifeguards to help with OLLI classes that meet at the PAC pool. Please contact Alise Brown or 294-2141 if you are interested in serving as a lifeguard during any of our OLLI terms.

COURSE ANNOUNCEMENTS

HFE556 Spin for All START TIME has been changed and will now meet on Mondays from 2 – 3 p.m.
HFE539 AquaZumba DAY has been changed and will now be meeting on Mondays from 9 – 10 a.m.
HFE587 Core Performance will now meet Thursdays, 8:45-10:15 a.m.
ACLM190 Met Opera will now meet Thursdays, 10:45-12:15.

OLLI HAPPENINGS

The Straight Talk lecture series, presented by OLLI and the Riley Institute at Furman, begins this week. We are SOLD OUT for August 29 and September 5 at the Younts Conference Center, but tickets are still available for the September 12 event at McAlister Auditorium. This year’s series is Nationalist Fervor on the Rise in the U.S. and Europe. The rise in the U.S. and Europe of populist nationalism is considered by many to be the single-most important political development of the 21st century. Join us to learn more. Tickets for OLLI members are $10 for individual sessions ($15 general public). Register online, or call or come by the OLLI Office. Our OLLI@Furman Baiden Wall Fall 2019 Exhibit will be Sept 9-Oct 11. The theme is “Hello Yellow!”
and offers the challenge of creating images featuring the color yellow. Put on your thinking caps and incorporate yellow in a photograph, drawing, painting, weaving, fiber arts, etc. OLLI members and staff are invited to submit artwork. Submission dates are August 12-30. Please submit only ONE entry. Submission Form available ONLINE

OLLI has a good group of Hand Chime ringers returning to continue ringing with us this year. To build on their excitement, we would like to add additional ringers. If you have music reading ability, we can teach you to ring hand chimes. If enough additional ringers care to join with us, we would consider two ringing groups. We meet Wed. 12:20-1:20 p.m. in HC111. If you are interested in ringing, please email Shelden Timmerman.

The Bowling Sig will resume league play on Mon, Sept 9. The Fall League will last 14 weeks, ending Dec. 9. Teams will be created based on the number of participants. The league fee of approximately $140 is due the first day of bowling. Bowling at Bowlero of Greenville (Name change from AMF Star Lanes), 740 Pleasantburg Drive, Greenville at 12:50 p.m. and will conclude after bowling three games. There will be a meeting at 12:30 on Sept 9, followed by league play. If interested contact Michael Halloran.

Let’s play Bocce! The OLLI Bocce SIG will meet on Wednesdays at 3 p.m. during the Fall term, weather cooperative. Meet in the lobby or in the field across the drive where the Furman band practices. What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

Furman Theater Season Tickets are available now at a discounted price of $51 for OLLI members and can be purchased HERE. This offer includes four theatrical productions by Furman Theater performed at The Playhouse on campus. The season opens Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m. with the musical “Pippin.” Single tickets for the musical are $18 for seniors.

What’s GOING ON Around Greenville?

The Peace Center has a special offer for seniors for the Broadway musical, The Band’s Visit. On Thursday, Aug 29 at 1 p.m., there is a special weekday matinee with a 20% off offer for Seniors. Paris Mountain State Park will hold a School Program Volunteer Training/Orientation Tues, Aug 27, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. During the school year, volunteers will share the wonders of nature with 2nd and 5th graders. They can assist students in learning about the creek, lead 2nd graders on a nature hike around Lake Placid, or help with a 5th grade Forest Ecology program. Greenville Jewish Film Festival Summerfest presents Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles on Aug 25, from 5-8:30 p.m. at the Greenville ONE Building Theater, 2 Washington St, Greenville. This incredible documentary highlights the story of the making of one of Broadway’s most beloved musicals. Visit online for more information.

Artist Call! Each year, the Greenville Master Gardeners chooses a local artist’s work that conveys the theme of the annual symposium. The 2020 theme is “American Gardens~Revealed!” A broad interpretation of this theme is acceptable. Submission deadline is August 31. The selected artist will be awarded $400. Join ReUNITED on Wed, Sept. 4 10 -12:30 p.m., for a conversation with Table 301 founder and United Way board member Carl Sobocinski. Carl will take us through his journey from restaurateur to philanthropist. He will also introduce you to United Way agencies Meals on Wheels, Project Host and Loaves and Fishes.
