OLLI NOTES March 8, 2019

The OLLI Office is open 8:30-5 Monday-Thursday, and 8:30-4 on Fridays. Our number is 864-294-2998.

Spring 2019 Registration continues online and in the office. Some classes and bonus events have filled, so consider having a backup. If you are on a waitlist, please know that we are working to see where we can add people to classes. If your statement says “Registered Not Paid,” you are registered for your classes and just need to pay for the class (cash or check) the next time you are in the office. Please keep in mind that each member may sign up for two Bonus Events. If you are on a Bonus Event waitlist, you may add one more.

Spring Cleaning for the Herring Center Carpets! Please note this will be on Fri, Mar 15 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Course evaluation time is here! You have the opportunity to provide us with feedback on each of your course experiences. This online evaluation will take 5 minutes and provide great input to your instructors. (Paper copies are available in the OLLI Office.) Following are the links to complete your evaluations online:

OLLI Curriculum Enhancement Grants: Have you always wanted to teach an OLLI course but need to do a little research or attend a class? Need the funds to do so? OLLI members can receive grants of up to $2000 for costs associated with developing a new course or modifying an existing one. Applications are available here or on the OLLI bulletin board. Let’s play Bocce! The OLLI Bocce SIG will meet on Wednesdays at 3 p.m. during the winter term, weather cooperative. Meet in the lobby or in the field across the drive where the Furman band practices. OLLI Bowling SIG will resume the bowling league on Mon, Mar 25@12:50 p.m. The league will last 8 weeks, throughout the semester. Teams will be created based upon number of participants and will bowl three games each week. Weekly fees are approximately $10. On Mar 25 there will be an organizational meeting at 12:30, followed by league play. SIG meets at Bowlero, Greenville (formerly AMF Star Lanes.) Contact Mike Halloran.

What’s Going on at Furman?
The Furman Singers will wrap up their annual spring tour with two concerts on the Furman University campus Mon, Mar 11, and Tues, Mar 12, at 8 p.m., Daniel Memorial Chapel. Enjoy the Furman Symphonic Winds Concert Fri, Mar 15 @ 8 p.m. McAlister Auditorium, $5 at the door.

Reclaimed Book Signing on Tues, Mar 19 at 5:30 p.m. at the Furman Bookstore with author, woodworker, and criminal justice reform advocate Jerry Blassingame.

“Knowing in Part,” exhibition by Aaron Collier, assistant professor in the Newcomb Art Department at Tulane University, will be on display Thurs., Feb. 28, through Thurs,, Mar 28, in Thompson Gallery of the Roe Art Building on campus. What’s Going on Around Greenville?
Music on Sunday Concert Series presented by The Temple of Israel will feature Wendy Jones performing “Everything is Rosie” – A Tribute to Rosemary Clooney on Sun, March 10th at 3 p.m. as the finale to the 2018/2019 series. The Guild of the Greenville Symphony is excited to announce the theme of their fundraiser to benefit the Greenville Symphony Orchestra on, Sat, Mar 9, 7-10:00 p.m. at Zen (924 S.Main Street, Greenville). Visit Here! “Carnivale” will be an event to remember with entertainment including an aerial dancer, juggler, magicians and more. Admission is $125 per person including valet parking, open bar, heavy hors d’oeuvres, and dancing.

Grandchildren visiting for Spring Break? The Upcountry History Museum will explore writer illustrator Jerry Pinkney’s connection with literature and his creation of the images that bring life to a story when it hosts the Jerry Pinkney: Imaginings exhibition. The exhibit’s immersive portion invites visitors to enter a world of literacy adventures as they step into the pages of Jerry Pinkney’s books. Interactive experiences and themed reading environments take visitors on a journey through the world of classic and contemporary literature including The Jungle Book, Gulliver’s Travels, Puss in Boots, The Little Match Girl, John Henry, The Ugly Duckling and many more. Momentum Bike Clubs is holding an awards dinner on Thurs, April 11. Momentum Bike Clubs is an organization that creates uplifting mentoring relationships with underserved youth, using bicycling as a platform. Tony Elliot, co-offensive coordinator for the National Champion Clemson Tigers, will be keynote speaker, sharing his own story of overcoming childhood trauma to become a key part of Clemson’s rise to the top of college football.
