OLLI NOTES February 22, 2019

2019 Spring Registration begins Feb.26, 8 a.m. for course package holders and Feb 28, 8 a.m. for single course purchasers. Make sure you go online this weekend to READY YOUR ACCOUNT by checking your Username and Password so that login will be smooth when you are ready to register. Call or come by the office before registration if you need assistance (864.294.2998.)

Sodas and Snacks! Vending Machines are now available in the Herring Center on the lower level.

Our trusty facility handyman Johnnie Lavender will be joining the ranks of the retired next month! In honor of his 22 years at Furman and OLLI, we would like to invite our members to write notes of congratulations and well wishes for him. If you would like to write a note or card, please drop off in Nancy’s office by Wed., Mar 4. Help us keep this a secret as this is a SURPRISE!

OLLI Curriculum Enhancement Grants: Have you always wanted to teach an OLLI course but need to do a little research or attend a class? Need the funds to do so? OLLI members can receive grants of up to $2000 for costs associated with developing a new course or modifying an existing one. Application forms are available here or on the OLLI bulletin board. Read and Explore with OLLI 2019
• Read Denise Kiernan’s The Last Castle. Check out a copy in the office and return for another reader.
• Alan Toney presents Whatever Happened to Cornelia Stuyvesant Vanderbilt? Tues, Feb. 26, 3:15p.m., HC110. Cornelia, the only child of Biltmore’s George and Edith Vanderbilt, was raised in luxury. Inspired by her parents’ concern for the wider world, she left her marriage to a British aristocrat for a varied and eccentric life of travel, love and the arts.

Travel with OLLI
There is still time to register for the Montgomery Civil Rights Trip March 17-18. Deadline is Feb 27! This compelling, historical trip will include behind-the scenes special visits to the Legacy Museum, the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, the Freedom Ride Museum, and Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, allowing participants to gain a greater understanding of this pivotal period in American History. The deadline for registration for Road Scholar Architectural Masterworks of Frank Lloyd Wright Trip is fast approaching on February 28! OLLI members will have the privilege of being guided by a renowned Wright expert while visiting some of FLW’s greatest works in the Midwest. In addition, there will be a Frank Lloyd Wright course offered in the spring to get you ready for this wonderful trip. Space is limited. Brochures in the office or online. As you plan for your spring classes, check out CEB1716 Education in America. A highlight of this course is the exceptional list of presenters, including Dr. Scott Henderson, Professor of Education at Furman University; Dr. Burke Royster, Superintendent, Greenville County Schools; Judy Bainbridge, retired Furman professor and local historian; and other Furman staff and community leaders. Members of this class will enjoy an overview of education locally and statewide, both Past and Present Day.

OLLI HAPPENINGS
Lunch and Learn Tuesdays, where community speakers present a variety of interesting topics. Free and open to the public, 12:30-1:20 p.m., HC110. Bring your lunch and enjoy! On Feb 26, Bill Fox, Project Manager for Hughes Agency, will be present Unity Park : Once a Place of Division Will Be a Place of Unity.

OLLI@Furman 2019 Baiden Wall Spring Exhibit will be Mar 25 – May 21. The theme is “A Preponderance of Purple” (preponderance defined as majority, emphasis, lots etc.) Why Purple? We have had exhibits featuring red and blue. When you mix those colors together, what do you get? Purple! Put on your thinking caps and incorporate lots of purple in a photograph, drawing, painting, weaving, fiber arts, etc. OLLI members/staff may submit artwork by Mar 15. Please submit ONE entry. The Movie SIG will meet Feb 25 at 3:15 in HC103. Space limited, contact Debbie Ahlers to confirm and for info. The selected movie is Doubt (2008) with Philip Seymour Hoffman & Meryl Streep. Watch the film on your own before the meeting. Discussion will include interesting facts and reactions to the movie.

Help Us Bring a Little Sunshine Into The Lives Of Older Adults In Need! Join The Community Volunteer SIG Wed., Feb. 27, 12:20-1:20 p.m., HC004 to learn about OLLI Member Jean Blank’s Compassionate Outreach Initiative. We need flower arrangers, gardeners, knitters, readers, friendly visitors, therapy dogs or your creative IDEAS. Volunteer based on your availability. Contact Tom Nowlin.

Bridge anyone? All OLLI members who enjoy a social game of bridge are invited to join the Bridge SIG on Mondays at 1:30 p.m. @ Herring Center’s Manly Lobby. This is a wonderful way to keep your game sharp and enjoy the company of other OLLI members at the same time. Contact Tanis Bryan with questions or just show up on Mondays. If you like Talkin’ Baseball, we have the SIG for you! The Talkin’ Baseball SIG is being formed to offer an opportunity for OLLI members to share time discussing all things baseball: current game, baseball history, Hall of Fame, movies, books, collectables and anything else related to the national pastime. What’s Going on at Furman?
Steinway Artist, Sandra Wright Shen in recital Thurs, Feb. 28, 8 p.m., Daniel Recital Hall. Free and open to the public, including music by Bach, Beethoven, Liszt, Ravel, and Chopin. As Furman’s Distinguished Visiting Professor of Piano, Shen will lead a master class with students Wed, Feb 27, 8-10 a.m., Daniel Recital Hall. The public is invited to attend.

Toqueville Series is devoted to seeking the truth about the moral and philosophic questions at the heart of political life. Wed., Feb.27 at 5 p.m., Baylor University professor, Mary Nichols will be speaking on Friendship in Aristotle’s “Ethics” in Johns Hall 101, Furman University. Free and open to the public.

The Riley Institute presents The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row with Anthony Ray Hinton on February 27, 7 p.m. McAlister Auditorium. A book signing by Mr. Hinton will follow. Free, but reservations are encouraged. Learn more and reserve your seat here.

What’s Going on Around Greenville?
Greenville Jazz Collective presents Deanna Witkowski at the Carolina Music Museum on Mon, Feb. 25 @ 7:30 p.m. The performance is part of the GJC’s Celebration of Women in Jazz 2019 and will include originals and selections from the liturgical and small group music of Mary Lou Williams. Tickets are $20 Here.

1st Annual Greenville Jewish Film Festival Featuring 3 days of films and special events will be held Thurs, Feb 28 – Sun Mar 3. Visit the website for information on the featured films and to purchase tickets.

The Guild of the Greenville Symphony is excited to announce the theme of their fundraiser to benefit the Greenville Symphony Orchestra on, Sat, Mar 9, 7-10:00 p.m. at Zen (924 S.Main Street, Greenville).
