OLLI NOTES January 11, 2019

OLLI Office hours are 8:30-5, Monday-Thursday, and 8:30-4 on Fridays. The office number is 864-294-2998.
In the event of inclement weather, OLLI follows the university schedule. If Furman closes, we will cancel OLLI classes and close the office. We will send an email and post on Facebook if there is a closing.

The Herring Center is a busy place while classes are in session. Please remember that there’s a small window of time after a class ends for the next one to get set up. If you are enjoying a conversation with a classmate or instructor, please continue those chats in the lobby.

Nametags: Thank you for wearing your nametag! That makes it easy to greet friends old and new. We make nametags for all brand-new members. If you are a returning member, we only make a new nametag if you let us know you have lost the original. Please use your nametag from term to term.*** Whether you are a new or returning member, please check the nametag boxes to see if yours is in there. If it’s a duplicate, turn it in to the office so that we can recycle it.***

Update from Council President, May Wellborn
We have had a wonderful year of celebrating our FULIR/OLLI 25th anniversary. It would not have been possible without many OLLI members stepping up and contributing their time and talents. The council recognizes that our OLLI is so successful because of a willingness of our membership to be involved in creating a welcoming and stimulating environment. We have a reputation for excellence of leadership, nationally (thank you, Nancy!) and for being one of the fastest growing OLLI programs. Each of the standing committees is committed to expanding the diversity and opportunities available to become involved. Many programs we have now are a result of volunteers seeing a need – travel, expanded SIGs, Read and Explore, new courses, special speakers, social events, etc. We welcome suggestions! If you are interested in becoming more involved, either occasionally or in the longer term, please contact the office or Kathy Road, the Volunteer chair. We will help you find a place. Volunteers are the heart and spirit of OLLI at Furman!

OLLI HAPPENINGS
Lunch and Learn Tuesdays, community speakers present a variety of interesting topics. Free and open to the public, 12:30-1:20 p.m., HC110. Bring your lunch and enjoy! On January 15, Russia in the Time of Putin:Russia Resurgent?, presented by Michael Bressler, professor of Political Science at Furman University.

OLLI and Chautauqua present a private OLLI performance of Napoleon, on Saturday, February 2 at the Herring Center. Come for a social at 4 p.m., followed by the performance. No military figure in history has been quite as polarizing as Napoleon Bonaparte. Was he a monster, driven by an endless, ruinous quest for military glory? Or a social and political visionary brought down by petty, reactionary kings of Europe? Mark Schneider, a historical interpreter at Colonial Williamsburg, will help us find the answers. With an uncanny resemblance to Napoleon, Mark has performed as the emperor around the world – we are in for a treat! Tickets are $5 and are available with check or cash in the OLLI office.

Bowling SIG begins Monday, Jan. 14 at AMF Star Lanes. Organizational Meeting at 12:30 p.m. to form teams, and play begins at 1 p.m. Cost: $9 weekly. All bowlers (any skill level) are welcome. Contact Mike Halloran.

The Olli Hand Chime Group will begin rehearsals Wed, Jan 16 (12:20-1:20), HC111. Our hope is to have a full three octave group of ringers who will prepare pieces and play at various functions during the year. We need two more ringers, with some music reading experience, to fill our group. If you can read the music, we can teach you to ring the Hand Chimes. Questions? Email Shelden. Come join us for a fun, rewarding time.

Enjoy watching and discussing movies? OLLI Movie SIG is for you! We will view a movie on our own, then meet to discuss, share reactions and learn facts. First up is “Into The Wild” (2007), the true story of Christopher McCandless who, after graduating from Emory, began a controversial cross-country adventure that ended tragically in Alaska. Meeting is Mon. Jan 28, 3:15 (1hr) in HC103. Space is limited, RSVP to Debbie.

Parlez-vous Francais! The French SIG will meet at 3 p.m. in HC003 on Tuesdays during the winter semester. We will discuss French culture from the point of view of Asterix and Obelix in their adventure, “Le Tour de Gaule d’Asterix” by Goscinny and Uderzo. Contact Betty Kuhnert with questions.
