Deadline approaching! Please take a few minutes to complete a survey for the Osher National Resource Center. This survey will provide information to Osher Institutes nationally, and OLLI@Furman will also receive our own specific results. Deadline to complete is next Friday, so now is the time. Thank you to everyone who has bought a parking sticker for 2018-19. If you still need to get yours, you can print and fill out a form here or pick one up in the OLLI Office. Everyone who comes to campus for OLLI courses or events needs to have one, even if you park only in the Herring Center lot. Cost is $10, which covers registering cars through the third-party vendor University Police use for traffic control and enforcement. Questions? Contact Nancy Kennedy.

What’s happening in China and how should the US respond? Join us to hear from Dr. Kate Kaup, the James B. Join FULIR Founding Director Sarah Fletcher and current OLLI Director Nancy Kennedy for a Friday Bonus Event, The History of Learning in Retirement at Furman, to learn all about the history of FULIR and OLLI. Share your opinions with Furman students at Loneliness and Aging in Place: A Collaborative Discussion. The event begins with a seminar presented by Dr. Megan Weis and Ms. Maya pack, both Furman graduates who work in public health in South Carolina. Breakout sessions will follow, to include Furman students, OLLI members, community partners. Thursday, October 25, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Patrick Lecture Hall (Plyler 126) and Khort Commons. Free admission. As you enjoy the Furman Dining Hall and OLLI’s $6 discount, please know that nobody is allowed to take their own takeout container per DHEC regulations. Either make a plate and enjoy it in the dining hall, OR request a takeout box from the cashier. In addition, you should not bring in plastic bags to take home items from the bakery area. Thank you for your help in keeping this discount privilege available for all.

Interested in celebrating the work of one of the world’s most legendary architect as you visit some of his greatest works in the Midwest? Join us to learn more about an upcoming OLLI @ Furman Frank Lloyd Wright Architecture Masterworks Trip at an Interest Meeting on Wed, Oct.31 at 12:30 p.m. in HC113. We will share details about this upcoming trip offered by the travel committee. Please contact Heidi if you are unable to make the meeting, but interested in learning more.

Lunch and Learn Tuesdays, community speakers present a variety of interesting topics. Free and open to the public, 12:30-1:20 p.m., HC110. Bring your lunch and enjoy! “A Preventative Approach to the Affordable Housing Problem,” with speaker, Matthew Yocum of Rebuild Upstate on Oct. 23.

Community Volunteer SIG will meet Thurs Nov. 1, 12:20–1:20 p.m. in HC005. We simplify the process of finding an opportunity for you to become meaningfully engaged in the community with a flexible volunteer opportunity that utilizes your skills and interests. OLLI Golfers – The tentative date of the 2nd Annual OLLI Golf Scramble is Mon., Mar 4, 2019. The plan is to have a shotgun start at 10 a.m. Cost will be approximately $75 per player with golf, cart fees, balls, box lunch, and prizes. Furman University will host Islam Awareness Week, Oct. 22-Nov. 2 as the university addresses the fundamental challenges related to the topic of Islam in America. Event list available here.
Furman University Department of Music will host Visiting Professor and pianist Gilead Mishory in concert Monday, Oct. 22, at 8 p.m. in Daniel Recital Hall, Furman. Reception following. For info online.

Douglas Brinkley, author and revered presidential historian will speak at The Poinsett Club in Greenville Thur., Oct. 25, at 6 p.m. His talk, “Highs and Lows of the American Presidency: Past, Present and Future,” Reservations are required. Each semester the Furman Cothran Center for Vocational Reflection facilitates Conversations – where faculty and/or staff from the Furman community share their vocational stories.
