Celebrating 25 years of Learning in Retirement

 

Summer registration continues!  Register online or in the OLLI office. There is still room for you in Baby Steps Toward Public Speaking, Bike the Swamp Rabbit Trail and DIY Workshop with Grandkids & Home Depot and offered for the first time – Business Simulation Game, It’s a Match and Christmas in June. Call the office if these are the classes for you!

The Nominating Committee is pleased to announce the following slate for Council openings to be voted on at the Spring Luncheon on May 22:  President-Elect/VP Membership: Sally Bornmueller; VP Finance and Administration: Ron Eldridge; Members at Large: Mary Kay Kantz and David Johnson and filling an unexpired two-year term as Member at Large: Tom Nowlin. Thank you to May Welborn, VP/President Elect/Nominating Committee Chair and her committee for their work, and thank you to the nominees who said “yes” when asked!

Bob Dylan Part II – Dylan and Friends will conclude with a Birthday Bash for Bob on Thursday, May 24, 1:30–3 p.m. in HC110, featuring musical artist Richard Bryant from New York City. Richard has interpreted Dylan for NY audiences for many years and will perform a selection of Dylan tunes from the sixties to the present. All are welcome!

 

25 Years of OLLI/FULIR

It’s not too late to send in your favorite recipes! The cookbook committee invites you to send in your favorite recipes for 25th Anniversary OLLI Cookbook. Please don’t be shy! Email your recipes, including the complete recipe, your name, e-mail address and contact phone or drop a copy by the OLLI office. Questions? Contact Cathy Dwyer.

 

Save the Date OLLI Hikers! As part of the 25th Anniversary celebration OLLI members will be invited to take part in a special OLLI Hike on Wednesday, August 29. Hikes/walks will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a potluck lunch following around noon. Stay tuned for sign-up information!

 

OLLI HAPPENINGS

Have you enjoyed the Read and Explore with OLLI program the past two Winters?  Would you like to help plan for the 2019 version?  The Read and Explore Committee could use a few new members.  Email Margot Stewart for information.

 

Join the Living in Community SIG on Wednesday, May 23 in HC105 (behind the kitchen) at 1 p.m. to meet Todd Usher of Addison Homes. He will discuss aspects of housing construction for active seniors that want to age in place. Universal design and pocket communities will be reviewed. For more information, contact Elaine Brummett.

 

The Gluten Free SIG will be meeting at Grill Marks (Haywood Mall) on Wednesday, June 6 at 11:30 a.m.  If you are interesting in attending, please RSVP to Diane Bagwell  at 864.344.1976.

 

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

The 50th Anniversary year of Furman University’s Music by the Lake Summer Concert Series begins Thursday, May 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the university’s amphitheater. Opening the 11-concert series for this golden anniversary is “The Kings of Swing” performed by the Lakeside Concert Band. Learn more about the Summer Concert Series here.

 

Furman University, WYFF and the Upstate Chamber Coalition will host a Republican Gubernatorial Debate on May 29 at 7 p.m. at McAlister Auditorium. Learn more and register to attend here.

 

Art by South Carolina native son and U.S. Army combat veteran Brad Carraway will be on display through June 15 in Thompson Gallery of the Roe Art Building. Regular Thompson Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

 

Join M. Judson Booksellers for a Sunday Sit-Down Supper on May 20! Four courses, fine china, and a good book make for an event like no other. We’ll be hosting Asheville author Denise Kiernan and her history of the Biltmore Estate, The Last Castle.
