The OLLI Office is open 8:30-5, Monday-Thursday, and 8:30-4 on Fridays through December 18.

 

Registration continues online and in the office. Some classes and bonus events have filled, so please consider having a backup. If you are on a waitlist, we will call you if a spot opens up.  Each member may sign up for two Bonus Events.  If you are on a Bonus Event waitlist, you can add one more.

 

Thank you to those who sponsored a Bridges to a Brighter Future student for the holidays. Please remember to drop off all gifts at the OLLI office no later than Dec. 11. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

 

Cocoa and Carols with the Chorale! The Herring Chamber Ensemble of the Greenville Chorale will join us in Manly Lobby to present a program of seasonal music.  You’ll enjoy a Christmas sing-a-long, warm drinks, yummy desserts (please bring something to share) and social time with OLLI friends Monday, December 11; reception at 6:30 p.m., concert begins at 7 p.m.  Free!  Reservations are helpful; call the office (294-2998) to let us know you’ll be there.

OLLI HAPPENINGS

It’s not too late to be a part of our annual Christmas Caroling on Tuesday, December 5 at Heartland Healthcare Center of Greenville East. We’ll meet at OLLI for rehearsal at 1 pm., carpool to Heartland and perform 3:15-4:15 p.m. This has been an enjoyable event for several years. Gloria Larkin leads the singing and Connie Kane-Maguire helps organize. For more information, please contact Connie at 864.915.2461.  It is important for us to know in advance how many will be there to sing.

 

Wear your holiday favorites and join us Wednesday, Dec. 6, 8:30-10:30 a.m. for an OLLI Breakfast in the Furman Dining Hall! A perfect time to share with OLLI friends before the holidays. Although the OLLI dining hall discount is not available in December, it will be for this breakfast only. Just $6 with your OLLI nametag!

 

Holiday Baking Classes at OLLI:  Cheryl Kraus, owner of Upcountry Provisions in Travelers Rest, will offer three holiday baking classes at OLLI.  Reservations required; sign up in the office (864.294.2998) for 1, 2, or all 3.  Time for each is 10:30-Noon, and there is an $8 materials fee for each class, which includes a snack.

December 18 – Red Velvet Cake and Caramel Cake

 

Greg Peters will offer an introductory workshop on flash photography on Friday, Dec. 8 at 10 a.m., HC111. It is a great way to control light, make unique images, and improve nature and landscape pictures.  The emphasis will be on understanding the benefits of flash, but feel free to bring your camera and any flash equipment you have. You may follow up the workshop with some research for your particular equipment.

Still wondering what to do with your Eclipse glasses? Bring them to OLLI and we will take it from there. Bob Moore is sending Eclipse glasses to underdeveloped countries for the 2019 Eclipse (that one will not be making its way to South Carolina.) Look for a box in the OLLI office. Questions? OLLI @ Furman Winter Term Baiden Wall exhibit will be January 16 – March 13, 2018. The title for this exhibit is “ALL ABOUT ANIMALS.” Submission dates are December 4-January 5.  All forms of artwork are eligible for this exhibit including photography, paintings, drawing, fabric art, woodworking, etc., that contain the theme “About Animals” whether wild or domestic.  Each 2-dimensional entry must be matted and framed. Hanging wire is required on all entries. No saw tooth hangers please. Quilts or fabric/yarn items should be capable of being hung on the wall. Smaller and freestanding items will be displayed in glass cases. Artwork is limited to one per person. Submission forms available here or in the OLLI office.

 

Share your favorite recipes! As part of the 25th Anniversary we are planning an OLLI Cookbook. Please don’t be shy! Email your recipes, including the complete recipe, your name, e-mail address and contact phone.

 

The Martin Luther King Day of Service at Furman University will be held on Monday, January 15, 2018. The Personal and Community Engagement Initiative (PCE) is working with Heller Service Corps to place OLLI members who want to participate in a MLK Day service project. There will be indoor and outdoor opportunities to benefit local agencies/organizations.  Volunteer hours will be from 9:30am to 12:30pm. Call for Photos! “OLLI@Furman Winter Photography Showcase–“Moving Water Theme” We hope you are enjoying the Photography Showcase in the Crabtree Room.  The next exhibition is a juried exhibit and will go up in January.  If you are an OLLI member or staff and wish to participate in this exhibit, follow the application guidelines posted here, pick up in OLLI office, or request to furmanolliphoto@gmail.com. Then e-mail your name, title of your artwork, email address, and a digital copy (medium sized JPEG – 2048 pixels on the long side) of your art to furmanolliphoto@gmail.com or drop off submissions to at the OLLI Office.  Submissions due by Dec. 15. Only one submission per artist please.

 

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

Furman will host its annual Moravian Love Feast service Sunday, Dec. 3, at 5 p.m. in Daniel Memorial Chapel. The event is free, and is presented by Furman’s Office of the Chaplains. Visit the website to learn more.

 

The Greenville Chorale, joined by the Blue Ridge High School Concert Choir, will share the holiday spirit at Christmas with The Chorale on Friday, December 8, 7:30 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium. Always one of the Upstate’s finest and most anticipated holiday concerts, this evening will thrill the heart with beautiful music from the Chorale – and from the audience as it joins in on the annual sing-along! OLLI discount is 20% for tickets. $30 ticket for only $24 in the OLLI office. Open seating, so come early and pick your seat.
