Happy Veterans Day, OLLI veterans. We appreciate your service!

 

The Fall Term has come to an end. We hope you enjoyed your classes, bonus events and other OLLI related activities.  Thank you to all of the instructors who taught interesting classes, volunteers who kept things running smoothly, and all who took a course or attended a bonus event.  Please take a few minutes to complete course evaluations for each course you took.  Following are the links to complete your evaluations online, or you can pick up paper copies of the survey in the office.

Winter Registration begins November 14 (8 a.m.) for course package holders and November 16 (8 a.m.) for single course purchasers. Make sure you go online this weekend to READY YOUR ACCOUNT  by checking your Username and Password so that login will be smooth when you are ready to register.  Call or come by the office before registration if you need assistance. Register at the Herring Center if you register in person on Tuesday or Thursday, beginning at 8 a.m.

 

The OLLI @ Furman 25th Anniversary Celebration will officially begin on January 11, 2018.  Please click this link to read about the various committees being formed.  As you will see, there are volunteer opportunities for everyone to share their time and talents.  Please contact Sally Bornmueller to indicate how you would like to be involved!

OLLI HAPPENINGS

Believe it or not, it’s almost time to deck the halls!  Help decorate the OLLI Tree Tues., Nov. 21, 10 a.m.  Bring a treat to share and enjoy music to get into the spirit as you get Manly Lobby ready for the holidays.

The self-publishing class, Publish Your Story, is proud to announce the release of Reflections—a collection of memoir, poetry and family stories written by class participants, aka the OLLI Indie Writers. Copies are available for preview and/or purchase at the Lulu bookstore. Ours is the one with the lovely foliage cover photo by class member Marcella Thaler.

 

As part of the 25th Anniversary an OLLI@ Furman Cookbook is being explored. All OLLI members and instructors are invited to share your favorite recipes! Please don’t be shy! Submit recipes to olliatfurmancookbook@furman.edu and be sure to include the complete recipe, your name, e-mail address and contact phone should clarification be needed.

 

Christmas Caroling! Our annual Christmas Caroling will be on Tuesday, December 5 at Heartland Healthcare Center of Greenville East with rehearsal beginning at 1 and caroling ending at 4:30 p.m. or so.  It is important to know ahead whether you plan to sing, so please contact Connie Kane-Maguire at 864.915.2461.

 

OLLI @ Furman Winter Term Baiden Wall exhibit will be January 16 – March 13, 2018. The title for this exhibit is “ALL ABOUT ANIMALS.” Submission dates are December 4, 2017 to January 5, 2018.  All forms of artwork are eligible for this exhibit including photography, paintings, drawing, fabric art, woodworking, etc., that contains the theme “About Animals” whether wild or domestic.  Each 2-dimensional entry must be matted and framed. Hanging wire is required on all entries. No saw tooth hangers please. Quilts or fabric/yarn items should be capable of being hung on the wall. Smaller and freestanding items will be displayed in glass cases. Artwork is limited to one per person. Submission forms will be available here or in the OLLI office.

 

Call for Photos!  “OLLI@Furman Winter Photography Showcase–“Moving Water Theme” We hope you are enjoying the Photography Showcase in the Crabtree Room.  The next exhibition is a juried exhibit and will go up in January.  If you are an OLLI member or staff and wish to participate in this exhibit, follow the application guidelines posted here, pick up in OLLI office, or request to furmanolliphoto@gmail.com. Then e-mail your name, title of your artwork, email address, and a digital copy (medium sized JPEG – 2048 pixels on the long side) of your art to furmanolliphoto@gmail.com or drop off submissions to at the OLLI Office.  Submissions due by Dec. 15. Only one submission per artist please.

 

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

A Furman Alum needs your help!  James Hughes (’15) is completing his Masters Degree in Applied Psychology.  He is looking for volunteers to complete a survey on Ageism and Leadership. It should only take 5 to 15 minutes to complete, and all responses are 100% anonymous and confidential. Dr. DIY A ABDO will host an “Every Campus a Refuge” conversation on Monday, November 13 at 5 p.m. in the Trone Center Burgiss Theatre. This free event is hosted by the Refugee Task Force.

 

Furman Symphonic Winds will present its annual fall concert Friday, Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium. Tickets for the Sound Quality Concert Series event are $10 for seniors. Learn more here.

 

Furman University Theatre will present the musical If/Then Nov. 10 & 11 and Nov. 15-18 at 8 p.m., with matinee performances Nov. 12 and Nov. 19 at 3 p.m. All performances take place in the Furman University Playhouse. Tickets are $15 for OLLI members. Tickets are available may be ordered online here or by calling the Theatre Box Office at 864-294-2125.

 

Bridges to a Brighter Future will be collecting non-perishable food for the Triune Mercy Center November 13-17. Look for a donation box in the Herring Center Lobby.  Canned fruit, canned vegetables, peanut butter, jelly, bottled water, soup, etc. would all be welcomed!

 

The World Affairs Council Upstate, in partnership with Furman University, invites you to the America and the World lecture series.  Dr. Kate Kaup will present Pivots and Turns in US-Asia Relations on Wednesday, November 15, 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. at Ogletree Deakins (300 N. Main St, Downtown Greenville)  Free to UI/WACU members;  $5 for non-members. Click here to register.

 

The Furman Symphony Orchestra (FSO) and Oratorio Chorus will present Handel’s Messiah Friday, Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium. The event is open to the public and is presented by the Furman Department of Music. Tickets for the Sound Quality Concert Series event are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $5 for students/youth. Furman students want to dance with you! Join Furman Swing and Shag & Zeta Tau Alpha for Snow Ball on Monday, December 4, 7 – 8:30 p.m. This swing and shag event will be held in the Trone Center, Watkins Room. RSVP to Christina.Sturgeon@furman.edu.

 

What’s GOING ON in and around Greenville?

Greenville County Veteran Affairs will present a Veterans Day Program on Saturday, Nov. 11 at Greenville County Veterans Memorial Wall (301 University Ridge). It will be an outdoor event with seating, parking and treats! Contact the Veterans Affairs office at 864.467.7230 for more information.

 

Shredding & E-Waste Recycling Day is Saturday, Nov. 11, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at the new public works facility located at 475 Fairforest Way, Greenville. Dispose of unwanted electronics and have sensitive documents destroyed and recycled in a secure manner. Visit the website for details of this event hosted by the City of Greenville!
