The Fall Term is coming to an end. We hope you enjoyed your classes, bonus events and other OLLI related activities.  Thank you to all of the instructors who taught interesting classes, volunteers who kept things running smoothly, and all who took a course or attended a bonus event.  Please take a few minutes to complete course evaluations for each course you took.  Following are the links to complete your evaluations online, or you can pick up paper copies of the survey in the office.

The Winter brochure is available online and should arrive at your homes next week. Registration for the Winter Term begins November 14 (8 a.m.) for course package holders and November 16 (8 a.m.) for single course purchasers. Please READY YOUR ACCOUNT  by checking your Username and Password now so that login will be smooth when your register. If you need assistance with your log-in we’ll have someone in the computer lab (HC104) on Thursday, November 9, 12:30-1:30 p.m.

 

Join us for the next recital featuring our beautiful grand piano on Monday, November 6 at 4 p.m. in Manly Lobby. Contemporary music specialist and Furman professor Daniel Koppelman and composer/technologist Christopher Dobrian will present a recital of interactive music for piano and computer. The concert program includes both composed and improvised pieces in which the sound of the piano is mediated and processed by the computer, as well as pieces in which the piano itself is the interface for intelligent interaction between pianist and computer.  Free. RSVPs to the OLLI Office are helpful so that we know how many chairs to set up.

 

Dr. Charles Davis, Furman’s First Gentleman, has published a cookbook, In the Kitchen at White Oaks, featuring recipes from the families of presidents John Plyler (1939-1964), Gordon Blackwell (1965-1976), John E. Johns (1976-1994), David Shi (1994-2010), Carl Kohrt (2013-14) and, of course, Elizabeth Davis.  Get your copies at a special book sale and signing in the Herring Center lobby on Thursday, November 9, 11:30-1.  Charles Davis will be here to sign books, and we will also be joined by OLLI members Martha Johns (First Lady of Furman 1976-1994) and John Plyler, whose father was President of Furman 1939-1964.  Books will be available for purchase in the Herring Center lobby that day for $24.99 plus tax.

OLLI HAPPENINGS

Lunch and Learn Tuesdays, speakers from the community present a variety of interesting topics.  Free and open to the public, 12:30-1:20 p.m., HC110.  Bring your lunch and enjoy! Nov. 7, “Birds and Bird Photography in South Carolina,” Anthony Q Martin, associate professor – Electrical and Computer Engineering, Clemson University, and photographer/birding expert, Lake Conestee.

 

The OLLI @ Furman 25th Anniversary Celebration will officially begin on January 11, 2018.  Please click this link to read about the various committees being formed.  As you will see, there are volunteer opportunities for everyone to share their time and talents.  Please contact Sally Bornmueller to indicate how you would like to be involved!

 

The OLLI Travel SIG will meet tonight, Friday, November 3, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m., in the Faculty/Staff Dining Room in the Furman Dining Hall.  After some socializing and prepared remarks, we will have the opportunity to dine together in the dining hall for only $6 with your OLLI nametag. We will hear about trips being planned for later this year. One member will share some of his experience and advice on how to plan train trips around North America and Europe if you enjoy watching the world go by out a train window.

 

Looking to “give back” with a flexible volunteer opportunity that utilizes your skills and interests? Your OLLI peers can help! Visit the Community Volunteer SIG on Wed., Nov. 8, 12:20–1:30 p.m. in HC004 to learn about opportunities with 19 organizations. The Carillons and Bells Class and OLLI Consort SIG (recorders) will perform in the Lobby on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 3:15 p.m.  Come by to see and hear what we’re all about!

 

Save the Date! Our annual Christmas Caroling will be on Tuesday, December 5 at Heartland Healthcare Center of Greenville East with rehearsal beginning at 1 and caroling ending at 4:30 p.m. or so.  It is important to know ahead whether you plan to sing, so please contact Connie Kane-Maguire at 864.915.2461.

 

As part of the 25th Anniversary an OLLI@ Furman Cookbook is being explored. We are excited about the opportunity to showcase the many culinary talents housed within our OLLI membership. All OLLI members and instructors are invited to share your favorite recipes! As submissions are compiled we will know better about the timing of the cookbook release and if a call for more recipes will be needed. Please don’t be shy! Recipes can be submitted to olliatfurmancookbook@furman.edu. Please be sure to include the complete recipe, your name, e-mail address and contact phone should clarification be needed.

 

Call for Photos!  “OLLI@Furman Winter Photography Showcase–“Moving Water Theme” We hope you are enjoying the Photography Showcase in the Crabtree Room.  The next exhibition is a juried exhibit and will go up in January.  If you are an OLLI member or staff and wish to participate in this exhibit, follow the application guidelines posted here, pick up in OLLI office, or request to furmanolliphoto@gmail.com. Then e-mail your name, title of your artwork, email address, and a digital copy (medium sized JPEG – 2048 pixels on the long side) of your art to furmanolliphoto@gmail.com or drop off submissions to at the OLLI Office.  Submissions due by Dec. 15. Only one submission per artist please.

 

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

Help a Furman student! Help psychology students by participating in two different research studies:

  1. The Social Cognition and Aging Lab needs volunteers to complete an online survey about your personal experiences with memory tasks. The survey takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. You will be compensated $3 for your time. You must be 65 or older. Sessions will be in the Herring Center Computer Lab (HC104): November 6, 12:30-2:30 p.m. No need to RSVP, just come! If you would like to help but are unavailable during the times above, email for an appointment.
  2. Help with a second study on mindfulness to support Positive Psychology Research. You’ll complete a paper survey in the Herring Center lobby and it will take about 25 minutes. 9:30-11 or after 1 p.m., Monday/Wednesday/Friday next week.  Contact Anna Peddle to schedule an appointment.

 

Join Judy Aten, OLLI Instructor and retired teacher of English, playwriting and acting, for an exploration of the works of Katherine Hepburn at the Upcountry History Museum’s Friday Flicks. Each program will begin with a short talk on the story behind the film, followed by screening of the film, and ending with a brief Q&A. November 3, Bringing Up Baby and November 10, The African Queen. All programs begin at 1:00 pm. and are free to museum members and free with regular museum admission. Learn more here.

 

The Riley Institute, the Institute for the Advancement of Community Health, and the Shi Center for Sustainability present Climate Change is Real:  Now What? on November 8-9, 7 p.m. both evenings, in the Younts Center at Furman.  The 2-day conference features a variety of compelling speakers, including former astronaut Charles Bolden and former US Congressman Bob Inglis.  Learn more here.  Free.

 

The Woodlands at Furman (1500 Trailhead Court) invites all OLLI members to their 8th Annual Holiday Fair on Friday, November 10 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.  Stop by and enjoy unique gift items, raffle, music and so much more.

 

Furman University Theatre will present the musical If/Then Nov. 8-11 and Nov. 15-18 at 8 p.m., with matinee performances Nov. 12 and Nov. 19 at 3 p.m. All performances take place in the Furman University Playhouse. Tickets are $15 for OLLI members. Tickets are available may be ordered online here or by calling the Theatre Box Office at 864-294-2125.

 

The World Affairs Council Upstate, in partnership with Furman University, invites you to the America and the World lecture series.  Dr. Kate Kaup will present Pivots and Turns in US-Asia Relations on Wednesday, November 15, 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. at Ogletree Deakins (300 N.
