The OLLI Office will be closed Monday, September 4 for the Labor Day holiday.  We hope you enjoy the last weekend of summer.  Our regular office hours are 8:30-5 Monday-Thursday and 8:30-4 on Fridays.  The office number is 864-294-2998.

 

Join us for Back to OLLI on Thursday, Sept. 7, 3-4:30 in Manly Lobby at the Herring Center.  New member Orientation begins at 2:30 p.m.   You may purchase lanyards and OLLI mugs, pick up your name tag and parking sticker, meet and reunite with your OLLI friends, and enjoy refreshments. Don’t miss the fun!

 

Fall Registration continues! Please refer to your confirmation e-mail and note the “class status” for the courses for which you registered (registered, registered not paid, waitlist). If you have questions regarding your confirmation, we invite you to call the OLLI office at 294-2998.

 

**All OLLI members will receive parking passes at Back to OLLI or your first class along with nametags for new members.  There is no need to make a special trip to the office for your nametag or parking sticker.  Returning OLLI members, please use the nametag you already have.**

 

Ever wonder how the Herring Center stays so clean with all of the OLLI members in and out throughout the year! Well, her name is Sandy Dill and we are thrilled to have her here with us. Please be sure to stop and introduce yourself to Sandy and thank her for taking such great care of us.  You might even get to share the joys of being grandparents with her!

Attention all OLLI members! Please consider becoming a class liaison. No experience is required and it’s a wonderful way to assist our wonderful instructors and get to know other OLLI members. “OLLI@Furman Fall Photography Showcase – “Black and White and Monotone.” Call for Photos! We hope you are enjoying the Photography Showcase in the Crabtree Room.  The next exhibition is a juried exhibit and will go up in October.  OLLI members or staff who wish to participate in this exhibit should follow the application guidelines posted here, pick up in OLLI office, or email your request.  Then e-mail your name, title of artwork, email address, and a digital copy (medium sized JPEG – 2048 pixels on the long side) to furmanolliphoto@gmail.com. or drop off submissions to be juried at the OLLI Office.   This is a black and white and monotone exhibition only.  Submissions due Sept. 15. Only one submission per artist please.

On Thursday, September 14 at 1:00 p.m., there will be an organizational meeting in HC102 for the Jam on Pickers SIG. If you’re tired of playing alone in your living room, grab your guitar and come check it out. We’ll talk awhile, share ideas, do a little picking and see if we can make it happen. Questions? Interested in cycling with other OLLI members?  If so, the Swamp Rabbit Cycling SIG might be just right for you. Please contact Janet Aguilar at 864.414.1944 to let her know of your interest.  Based on the response, a ride schedule will be developed. An organizational meeting will follow sometime in September.

The OLLI Classic Car SIG will have a meeting for members and anyone interested in Classic Cars on Tue., Sept. 5, HC004 (downstairs), 10a.m.-Noon. This is an informal gathering to share ideas along with two presentations: Al Konopka has information on his history with diesel engines and Scott McCombe will share his experience from Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.  Mark your calendars and plan to share car stories of your summer and expectations for the coming year.

 

Have an idea for a new course but need to do a little research? OLLI members can receive grants of up to $2000 to reimburse costs associated with developing a new course or modifying an existing one. To help encourage additional grant requests, the Committee will now accept and review applications in both the fall and the spring. Applications will be accepted twice a year with a Fall deadline of October 1, 2017 and a Spring deadline of March 1, 2018.  Application forms are available here or can be picked up in the OLLI office.

 

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

The Adulthood and Aging course at Furman is looking for volunteers (aged 60 and over) for students to interview as part of a class assignment. Volunteers will be interviewed 4-6 times (for about an hour each time) over the course of the semester. Students will ask about your personal experience with aging-related topics we are discussing in class (such as your life history, demographics, physical and health changes, cognitive changes, beliefs and attitudes about aging, social relationships, caregiving, and end of life planning). Interviews can take place by phone or in person on the Furman campus or at the Woodlands. Furman University Theatre presents John Patrick Shanley’s Danny and the Deep Blue Sea Fri. and Sat., Sept. 1-2 at 8 p.m., with a matinee Sept. 2 at 3 p.m. at The Playhouse on the Furman University campus. The Peace Center for Performing Arts invites you to, Fall for Poetry, a free adult workshop series Tuesdays, September 12 and 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the Peace Centers Ramsaur Studio. Working with professional poet Glenis Redmond, this adult workshop series will explore the theme of “Poetry as Memoir” as participants use form and process to discover their voice.
