August 11, 2017

The OLLI Office is open 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Fridays.

You should have received your copy of the Fall 2017 brochure. Fall registration begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday, August 15 for those purchasing course packages and 8 a.m. Thursday, August 17 for all others.  Pre-registration runs through Monday, August 14 at 9 a.m. During pre-registration, you can purchase your annual membership and a course package, if desired.  Pre-registration is not required, but it’s a great way to get those purchases out of the way before course registration begins. It’s also a great time to make sure you have your user name and password correct.  If you have trouble with either of these, please call the OLLI Office at 864-294-2998.

**Please note that we are not able to take credit card orders through the mail or in the office due to Furman network security compliance issues. All orders made via mail or in person must be paid with a check or cash. We strongly encourage everyone to register online. It really is the fastest, easiest way to register for courses, and you can pay by credit card. Staff and volunteers will be in the office this week and next to help you, so if you are unfamiliar with the online registration system, come on in and we can help you through it.

Hints for Computer registration – (www.furman.edu/olli)

Click on “Register Here.” and enter your user name and password.  Your shopping cart will be empty, and you begin shopping by clicking on the grey box stating, “Return to course catalog page.”   If the OLLI office assigned your user name, it will be Firstname.Lastname.  (If you changed it, or assigned it when creating your account, it may be something different.)  Please be reminded that Fall registration requires you to first place the Annual Membership into your cart.  Then proceed by adding your package selection (if applicable on August 15). Next, you will be able to select your classes and bonus events to add them to your cart. If registering for single courses (August 17), you will begin by adding your Annual Membership and then go straight to selecting your classes and bonus events. If you have pre-registered (see above – August 7), you will NOT need to add a membership and/or package when you register for classes.

OLLI HAPPENINGS

Are you ready for the eclipse?

On Monday, August 21, 2017, Greenville will be “within totality” (we will see the total eclipse).  Here are some ways you can enjoy this historic event.

  1. Furman University is hosting a free event in Paladin Stadium, 12-3 p.m. From Noon until 2 p.m., there will be tents with hands-on exhibits, free water stations, and concessions for sale.  At 2 p.m., everyone will take seats in the stadium, where Furman Professor and astronomer David Moffett will narrate what you are seeing.  The Furman band will provide appropriate background music.  Free eclipse glasses to the first 8,000 participants, and free parking.  If you are bringing grandchildren, this is the event for you.    Learn more on the Furman website.

  1. In conjunction with the Furman Event, OLLI is hosting a pre-eclipse party on the Club Level of Paladin Stadium. Tickets to the OLLI event are $10 and limited to the first 150 OLLI members to register.  We will enjoy eclipse-themed food (Moon Pies, anyone?), fun with OLLI friends, and air conditioning.  We will also provide eclipse glasses (but if you already have your own, please bring them).  At 2 p.m., OLLI members will exit the Club Room to take seats in the stadium for prime eclipse viewing and to enjoy the events mentioned above.  Come by the OLLI Office to reserve your spot; payment is by check or cash.

  1. Enjoy the event from the comfort of your own home. Greenville is expecting a large number of tourists that day, and officials expect heavy traffic.  If you are inspired by the events, OLLI writing instructor Bill Burns encourages you to put it on paper.  Write a poem, and send it in to OLLI.  We’d love to see your work, and may even publish a collection of poems if we have enough submissions.

Register now for the Straight Talk summer lecture series, presented by OLLI and the Riley Institute at Furman.  Join us Thursday evenings (6:30-8:30 p.m.), August 24, 31, and September 7.  This year’s title is Media and Politics in a Post-Truth Era.  We will be learning about fake news:  where it comes from, why we believe it, how to guard against it, and what is being done to slow its spread.  You can learn more and register online (credit card fees apply) here.  You may also register with cash or check in the OLLI office.

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

You may have seen on the news that several bears have been spotted on campus over the summer, including some right here at the Herring Center. Want to learn more about bears?  Come to Burgiss Theater in the Trone Student Center on Tuesday, August 8, 4-6 p.m. to hear from Tammy Wactor, a biologist with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and an expert on bears in the Upcountry.  She will share safety tips, discuss strategies for managing bears, and answer any questions.  Free, and no registration required.
