The drop/add period for Winter Term ends today, except for Monday classes.  After today, refunds will no longer be given. Remember there is a $10 fee if you drop without adding another class.

Welcome Sally!  Sally Gregoire is our new Department Assistant.  She starts Monday, January 30, and will be working with Carson for two days before Carson leaves for Furman’s Housing Office.  Sally’s smile may be familiar since she is a former OLLI office volunteer.  Please stop by to welcome her to our staff.  Sally’s hours will be 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

OLLI HAPPENINGS

OLLI On Stage’s winter production will be a staged reading (well-rehearsed, but NOT memorized) of several revue sketches from Silver Linings by Ted Tally.  Actors and crew needed!  Auditions: 12:30pm Mon., Jan. 30 (HC111) and Wed., Feb. 1 (HC104). By appointment: annetteinsc@gmail.com.

 

Planning to move to a smaller, safer home in the next 2-3 years?  Join the Living in Community SIG meeting with a developer/builder to discuss the possibilities on Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 10 a.m. Seating is limited so contact Elaine Brummett if you plan to attend.

 

In response to the Dining Around class experience, OLLI members and guests are invited to a special one night only Moroccan Dinner (fixed menu) at Passerelle Bistro (601 S. Main St., Greenville) Wed., Feb. 8, 5:45 p.m. OR 7:45 p.m. $25 per person includes non-alcoholic drinks; no substitutions. If you want to meet and socialize with fellow OLLI members who travel or want to travel, the Travel SIG is the SIG for you! The next meeting will be Friday, February 10 at 4:30 p.m. at Evergreen Lounge of the Woodlands. (1500 Trailhead Court). You may purchase beer and wine or bring your own beverage and snacks to share. Grab your nametag and join OLLI friends for an OLLI Breakfast in the Dining Hall on Tuesday, February 14 from 8 – 10 a.m. Cost is just $5 for all-you-can-eat with your OLLI nametag.  Choices include made-to-order omelets, fruit, breads, eggs, bacon, coffee, juice, and much more.  Fix your plate and then enjoy your meal in the Faculty Dining Room, reserved that morning just for OLLI.  Valentines not required!

WE WANT YOUR BEST SMARTPHONE/TABLET PHOTOGRAPHS! The next photo exhibition in the Crabtree room will feature smartphone and tablet photographs and will run starting in March. ALL PHOTOGRAPHS SUBMITTED WILL BE DISPLAYED. Photos must be taken on a smartphone or tablet (e.g. iPad) and must be 5”x7”.  If you are an OLLI member or staff and wish to participate there are 3 ways to enter: 1) send your name and a digital copy to furmanolliphoto@gmail.com and we will print your photo for you, 2) bring a 5”x7” print with a 1/4″ border and with your name on the back to the OLLI office, 3) bring your phone or tablet AND CHARGE CORD to the Herring Center on a date(s) to be announced and we will print your photo for you. What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

The Tocqueville Program at Furman will host Jean Yarborough as she addresses “Tocqueville and the American Republic” Wed., Feb. 1 at 5 p.m., Johns Hall 101. Free. Furman University Theatre presents the world premiere of Kappa Kappa Scream by Randall David Cook (Furman Class of 1991) on Feb. 8-11; 16-18 at 8 p.m., and Sun., Feb. 12 at 3 p.m. All performances take place in The Playhouse. Tickets are $12 for OLLI members.  For mature audiences only–not for those afraid of the dark!  ***As a special treat, Dr. Kristen Pressley and playwright Randall David Cook will present a pre-show talk on Wed., Feb. 1 at 3:15 p.m., HC110. ***

 

Furman’s Pauper Players present the vibrant musical Hairspray Feb. 2, 3, and 4 at 7:30 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium. Tickets are $10 and available online, at the Timmons Arena Box office, and at the door.

 

The Furman Department of Music will host a concert featuring the Akropolis Reed Quintet Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 8 p.m. in Daniel Recital Hall on the Furman campus. The concert is free and open to the public and is presented by the Furman University Partners in the Arts initiative funded generously by the Duke Endowment.

 

The Furman Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combos in concert Fri., Feb. 10, at 8 p.m., Daniel Recital Hall. A Sound Quality Concert Series event, tickets are $10 for seniors. For more information, call (864) 294-2086.

 

What’s GOING ON in and around Greenville?

Herring Chamber Ensemble 20th Annual Winter Concert, February 26. Program features “Bluegrass Mass” with bluegrass band, contemporary choral selections, and vocal jazz settings of Gershwin-Berlin-Kearn and others. We enjoyed the Christmas program the Herring Ensemble gave us, now we can enjoy more. Concert in Daniel Chapel at Furman, 2:30 p.m., Sunday, February 26. Discounted tickets for OLLI members ($30 ticket for only $24) are available in the OLLI office.  Limited seating.
