READ A GOOD BOOK LATELY?  It’s not too late to join hundreds of OLLI members in enjoying One Foot in Eden by acclaimed NC author Ron Rash. Set in the area now covered by Lake Jocassee, it’s history, mystery and local color all in one! READ a loaner copy available in the office (or pick up a copy locally or online).

 

EXPLORE the book in a talk by author Ron Rash right here on campus – Wed., Feb. 8, 3:30 p.m., just up the hill at the Younts Center. RSVP helpful, in the office.

 

Finished reading One Foot in Eden and looking forward to sharing your thoughts about it with other readers? You’re invited to HC111 Mon., Feb. 13, 12:30 to 1:15 for an informal book chat.  No reservation needed.

 

Did you miss seeing the film related to our book?  No worries—we’re doing it again!  Whether you’ve read Ron Rash’s One Foot in Eden not, you’ll enjoy this event, a screening of the 1960 movie classic Wild River on Fri., Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. at the Herring Center. OLLI member hosts Judy and Gary Aten will show how the movie’s setting and cultural impact foreshadow that of our book. This Elia Kazan/Montgomery Clift/Lee Remick film is preserved in the U.S. National Film Registry for its cultural, historic and aesthetic significance. Reservations essential; call or come by the Office.

 

OLLI HAPPENINGS

Lunch and Learn, Tuesdays, HC110, 12:30-1:15p.m. February 7: “Transforming our Diet for Personal and Planetary Health” with Frank Powell. PhD, Professor Emeritus, Health Sciences and Sustainability.

 

In response to the Dining Around class experience, OLLI members and guests are invited to a special one night only Moroccan Dinner (fixed menu) at Passerelle Bistro (601 S. Main St., Greenville) Wed., Feb. 8, 5:45 p.m. OR 7:45 p.m. $25 per person includes non-alcoholic drinks; no substitutions. Make reservations no later than Feb. 6 by calling Passerelle Bistro at (864) 509-0142.  Seating is limited to 70.

 

Want to socialize with fellow OLLI members who travel or want to travel?  The Travel SIG is for you! Join us Fri., Feb. 10 at 4:30 p.m., Evergreen Lounge of the Woodlands (1500 Trailhead Court). You may purchase beer and wine or bring your own beverage and snacks to share. Contact Betty Jo Shaw with questions.

 

Grab your nametag and join OLLI friends for Breakfast in the Dining Hall on Tue., Feb. 14 8–10 a.m. Cost is just $5 for all-you-can-eat with your OLLI nametag.  Choices include made-to-order omelets, fruit, breads, eggs, bacon, coffee, juice, and much more.  Fix your plate and then enjoy your meal in the Faculty Dining Room, reserved that morning just for OLLI.  Valentines not required!

 

Love food? Well, we have the SIG for you! All OLLI Foodies are invited to a Food SIG informational meeting Wed., Feb. 15, 12:20 -1:20 p.m., HC105 to discuss possible ways OLLI members might come together to enjoy food in and out of the kitchen. The Out and About Singles SIG will attend the Short Film Festival at the Gunter Theater Sun, Feb. 19. Cost is $10 per show. For more information, please contact Jana Kelley.

 

OLLI artists of any level are invited to the Open Studio SIG, Fridays, 1–4 p.m., HC005.   Bring your supplies, join in and don’t forget anything needed to clean up after.  Contact Chris Lane at 467-9144 with questions.

 

The next Baiden Wall Exhibit will be March 27–May 19. ALL ABOUT DRAWING will include all forms of drawing media i.e. pen and ink, pencil, charcoal and chalk. OLLI members, instructors and staff may submit one piece. All artwork must be framed and ready to hang, wire attached. No saw tooth hangers and no easel backed photo frames please. Submission dates:Feb. 20- March 3. Entry forms available in the office or online.

 

Dates set to print smartphone photographs for OLLI Photography Showcase!  All photograhs submitted will be displayed-one per artist please. Photos must be taken on a smartphone or tablet (e.g. iPad) and must be 5”x7.”  OLLI members and staff may enter in 1 of 3 ways: 1) send your name and a digital copy to furmanolliphoto@gmail.com and we will print your photo for you, 2) bring a 5”x7” print with a 1/4″ border and with your name on the back to the OLLI office, 3) bring your phone or tablet AND CHARGE CORD to the Herring Center from noon to 1:30 on Wed 2/15, Tues 2/28 or Thurs 3/2 and we will print your photo for you. Submission deadline March 6. Email furmanolliphoto@gmail.com  for detailed guidelines.

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

Furman University Theatre presents Kappa Kappa Scream by Randall David Cook (Furman Class of 1991) Feb. 8-11 and 16-18 at 8 p.m., and Sun., Feb. 12 at 3 p.m. All performances take place in The Playhouse. Tickets are $12 for OLLI members.  For mature audiences only–not for those afraid of the dark!

 

Furman’s Pauper Players present the vibrant musical Hairspray Feb. 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door.

 

The Furman Department of Music presents the Akropolis Reed Quintet Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 8 p.m. in Daniel Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

 

The Furman Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combos in concert Fri., Feb. 10, at 8 p.m., Daniel Recital Hall. A Sound Quality Concert Series event, tickets are $10 for seniors. For more information, call (864) 294-2086.

 

Enjoy Furman basketball Sat., Feb. 11 with a double-header! Women’s basketball vs Wofford, 2 p.m. and Men’s basketball vs Samford, 4 p.m. The 2017 Coaches’ Tour will take place between games in the Herring VIP Suite at Timmons Arena. The Bob Jones Museum and Gallery exhibit 500 Years: Luther’s Journey is now open for public viewing with museum general admission. As part of the opening you are invited to a special tour, Reformation in Pictures, which allows you to walk in and see first-hand commentaries chronicling Martin Luther’s impact on the people and culture of his time. Tours will take place on Monday, Feb. 13 at 4 p.m. and Tuesday-Friday, Feb. 14-17 at 3 p.m.  Tour fee is $3.  Note: The museum will be closing for renovation at the end of the day Saturday, February 18 for an undetermined amount of time so visit soon if it’s been on your list of things to do!
