The Winter brochure is available online and was mailed yesterday. Registration for Winter Term will begin November 15 (8 a.m.) for course package holders and November 17 (8 a.m.) for single courses. Please READY YOUR ACCOUNT by checking your Username and Password now so that login will be smooth when your register. If you need assistance with your log-in we’ll have someone in the computer lab (HC104) on Tuesday, November 8, 3-4 p.m. or Thursday, November 10, 12:30-1:20 p.m.

 

It’s not too late to come to this year’s BIG Fall event Cruisin’ with OLLI.  Revisit old time rock and roll, drive-ins, and hot wheels TODAY, Friday, October 28, 2-5 p.m. at the Herring Center. Jump back in time and share the fun with other OLLI members rockin’ to the tunes of American Bandstand, check out the wheels of the Classic Car SIG members and enjoy some favorite foods of the times. Thank you to the Social Committee in their work putting together this festive event!

 

We have had a number of OLLI members step up and to plan and host the OLLI Thanksgiving Potluck!  Hooray!  In order to make it official, we need a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church (Travelers Rest) to open the church, be present, etc. If you are an OLLI member, a member of Trinity Presbyterian and would like to spend Thanksgiving with OLLI friends, please contact Heidi Wright as soon as possible (294-2997).

 

Please be careful with the coffee!  Help us and our cleaning staff our by bringing your own travel mug (with a lid) or buying an OLLI mug in the office.  If you do have a spill, let the office know so that we can treat it quickly and hopefully prevent stains on our carpet and chairs.

OLLI HAPPENINGS

Would you love historical travel with a Furman faculty expert?  We have the trip for you! We will have an informational meeting on Wed., Nov. 2 at 3:15 p.m., HC105 with Furman professor, Marian Strobel, for those interested in taking part in a faculty led trip visiting the Battlefields of Western Europe in mid to late May, 2017.  The tentative itinerary begins and ends in Paris and includes excursions to quaint towns, historic battlefields, fascinating museums. Enjoy an Out and About Singles member luncheon Fri., Nov. 4 at Noon at Sweet Catherine’s in Fountain Inn.  Send your reservation request to Carolyn Rice by Nov. 1.  Participation is limited to 12 people.

 

Enjoy productions of the Royal Shakespeare Company captured live in HD from Stratford-upon-Avon.  King Lear will be presented Friday, Nov. 11 at 4 p.m. in Burgiss Theatre in the Trone Student Center.  Tickets available in the OLLI office and at the door–$16 for OLLI members, $18 for general public.  Prepare for the presentation at a King Lear Lunch and Learn led by Dennis Tavernetti Wed., Nov. 9, 12:30-1:15, HC113.

CALL FOR PHOTOS – OLLI@Furman Winter Photography Showcase: We hope you are enjoying the OLLI@Furman Photography Showcase in the Crabtree Room of the Herring Center.  It features images taken by OLLI members during OLLI photography classes last spring.  We are excited to announce that the next exhibition will run starting in January 2017. This time the theme will be FALL COLOR. There are no other restrictions.  The pictures may have been taken at any time and in any place.  If you are an OLLI member or staff and wish to participate send your name, the title of your artwork , email address, and a digital copy (medium sized JPEG – 2048 pixels on the long side) of your art to furmanolliphoto@gmail.com. Submissions are due no later than December 5.  Only one submission per artist please.  A copy of the guidelines can be picked up at the OLLI office or by request to furmanolliphoto@gmail.com.

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?  

The Furman University Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combos will present their fall concert Friday, Oct. 28 at 8 p.m. in Daniel Recital Hall. Presented by the Furman Department of Music, the concert is open to the public. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Tickets are available at the door.

 

Furman University is presenting a series of events addressing the global refugee crisis. Don Kerwin, Center of Migration Studies (NY), will present a faith-based reflection on the global refugee crisis on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. in Daniel Memorial Chapel. The lecture is part of the series “Refugee Crisis: Local and Global Responses,” which will run through Monday, Nov. 7. and is free and open to the public. The High Noon lecture series continues, Wednesdays at Noon in the Resource Room on the second floor of the Upcountry History Museum in downtown Greenville.  November 2 enjoy “I Need a Drink!” presented by Dr. Onarae Rice, Associate Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience, Furman University. Work by Furman University Department of Art faculty will be on display in Thompson Gallery, Roe Art Building, Oct. 7-Nov. 7. Thompson Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. A reception and talk with artists is set for Friday, Nov. 4, 6-8 p.m. in Thompson Gallery.

 

Furman Theatre presents The Women of Lockerbie Nov. 9-12 and 17-19 at 8 p.m., with 3 p.m. matinees Nov. 13 and 20. OLLI member tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Playhouse.  Playwright Deborah Brevoort will host a special pre-show discussion of the play on Friday, Nov. 11, 2:30 -4 p.m., HC110.

Seventh graders at the Charles Townes Center are working on an Activism Project. The goal is for students to identify and research an idea or issue they are passionate about in order to devise a way to positively impact the world around them. As part of this project, we are seeking community volunteers as mentors to offer advice and guidance to students as they work through their projects. Students will be matched with mentors–either individually or in groups–and will work together about once a week for a 50-minute class period.
