HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

The OLLI Office will be closed November 23 through November 27.  We hope you enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving.  The Office will reopen Monday, November 28.

 

Registration continues online and in the office. Some classes and bonus events have already filled, so please consider having a backup. If you are on a waitlist, please know that we are working to see where we can add people to classes.  If your statement says “Registered Not Paid,” you are registered for your classes and it could be the result of a computer error. You will be contacted if we need a payment. Please keep in mind that each member may sign up for two Bonus Events.  If you are on a Bonus Event waitlist, you can add one more.

 

There is room for you in these brand new courses: Business Now and Then with instructors Bob Dwyer, Bing Vick, George Hammond and more (M, 1:30 p.m.), Be a Poem (TH, 10:45 a.m.), Explore the Baha’i Faith (TH, 9 a.m.) and Modern Marketing Techniques (T, 9 a.m.). Help a local family!  Bridges to a Brighter Future is a program of Furman University for high school students whose potential outdistances their circumstances.  OLLI members are invited to sponsor a Bridges student for the holidays. Specifics are available in the Manly Lobby and all gifts are asked to be returned by December 12. Donation cap is $100. This can be a great giving opportunity to share with other OLLI friends.

 

COURSE ANNOUNCEMENTS

HIS689 Moments in American History will have a make-up class Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 1:30 p.m., HC110.

 

PAH883 Zentangle Advanced has been canceled for the Winter Term.  Watch for it in Spring.

 

Reminder to all interested in offering a Spring16 class, the course proposal form deadline is December 2.

 

OLLI HAPPENINGS

Believe it or not, it’s almost time to deck the halls!  Help decorate the OLLI Tree Tues., Nov. 22, 10 a.m.  Bring a treat to share and enjoy music to get into the spirit as you get Manly Lobby ready for the holidays.

For those who signed up for OLLI Thanksgiving Potluck on Thur., Nov. 26 – be on the lookout for an e-mail on Monday, Nov. 23.  Directions will be included in the e-mail and are also available in the OLLI Office.

 

The Travel SIG will meet tonight, Friday, Nov. 18 at 4:30 p.m. at the home of Sue Miller (101 Covington Rd, Greenville – just off Old Buncombe Road, very close to the OLLI.)  Bring your own beverage and snack to pass if you wish.  This is a very important meeting to discuss the future direction of the SIG and we need the input of all interested SIG members. The Out and About Singles SIG will have a Christmas party on Friday, December 2, HC 111 at 1 p.m. in the Herring Center. Please bring a snack to share. Come and meet some new people. RSVP to Susan Cooper or Carolyn Rice. Guests are welcome!

 

Our annual Christmas Caroling will be on Tuesday, December 6 at Heartland Healthcare Center of Greenville East. We’ll meet at OLLI for rehearsal at 1 p.m., carpool to Heartland and perform 3:15-4:15 p.m. This has been an enjoyable event for several years, and we welcome former and new singers. Gloria Larkin leads the singing and Connie Kane-Maguire helps organize. LAST CALL FOR PHOTOS – OLLI Winter Photography Showcase: We hope you are enjoying the OLLI@Furman Photography Showcase in Room 110 of the Herring Center, featuring images taken by OLLI members during photography classes last spring.  The next exhibition begins in January; the theme is FALL COLOR. Pictures may have been taken any time and place.  OLLI members should send your name, artwork title, email address, and a digital copy (medium sized JPEG – 2048 pixels on the long side) of your art to furmanolliphoto@gmail.com by Dec. 5.  One submission per artist please.  Guidelines available at the OLLI office or via email.

 

TRAVEL WITH OLLI

The Travel Committee needs your input! Did you know that more than 12 OLLI members have committed themselves to researching and planning wonderful trips for OLLI members to enjoy? The OLLI Travel Committee is looking at trips ranging from day trips to 10 day International trips.  Your feedback is needed to help determine what trips to explore and offer for OLLI members to enjoy.  If you are interested in traveling with OLLI, please take 5 minutes and complete this surveyWe can’t wait to get going!

 

You are invited to join other OLLI @ Furman members and Furman History Professor Marian Strobel on a historic exploration of the Battlefields of Western Europe, May 16 – 26, 2016. Starting and finishing in Paris, attendees will visit iconic battlefield sites, museums, glorious cathedrals and cemeteries significant to the American involvement in WWI and Normandy. Experience the cultural best of western Europe with visits to quaint cities such as Bruges, Arras, Reims, Amiens and Caen.  View the trip itinerary here. What’s GOING ON at Furman University?  

Furman Theatre presents The Women of Lockerbie 17-19 at 8 p.m., with 3 p.m. matinees Nov. 20. OLLI member tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Playhouse.

 

Discounted Men’s Basketball tickets! Come cheer on the Furman Men’s Paladin Basketball Team as they take on UNC Asheville, Tuesday, Nov. 22. at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased through the website (use promotion code: OLLI to receive discount) or at the ticket office. $1 coffee and free donuts while they last!

 

John Blevins, Th.D., acting director of the Interfaith Health Program at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health will be speaking on “What Really Matters?”as a part of the L.D. Johnson Lecture Series. His talk will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 7p.m. in the Daniel Memorial Chapel. A reception will follow in the Garden Room.

 

The Furman University Symphony Orchestra, the Furman Singers and Furman Men’s and Women’s Chorales will present “Christmas at Furman” Friday, Dec. 2 at 8 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium. The concert is open to the public and tickets for the Sound Quality Concert Series event are $10.

What’s GOING ON around Greenville?  

Come enjoy one of the performances by Carolina Bronze Handbell Ensemble and OLLI member Sharon Howell.  Concerts will be performed on November 18 at JL Mann High School, 7 p.m. and Sunday, November 27 at The Woodlands of Furman, 4 p.m.  Donations accepted. Alyson Amato, OLLI’s Movement Makers instructor, has arranged for OLLI Members to attend the International Ballet’s ‘The Nutcracker’ at a heavily reduced rate of $18 per ticket Orchestra Level. This Outreach Performance is on Friday, December 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Peace Center Concert Hall. Reserve tickets at the OLLI Front Desk with cash or check made out to CDC.
