Special Event: A group of OLLI members has developed the Personal & Community Engagement (PCE) Initiative, a personal service initiative to simplify matching older adults with meaningful volunteer positions compatible with your skills and desires. Come meet with your peers to discuss volunteer options with 15 Greenville Agencies. Wed., Oct. 19, 1:30-3:30, HC110. Sign up in the OLLI Office.

 

The Computer Technology Committee is offering a special session, Email and Personal Identity Security:  Why, How, And Your Responsibility with Duane Leet, on Thursday, October 13, 3:15 p.m., HC110. In the wake of the disclosure that Yahoo has been “hacked”, users are encouraged to reevaluate their own security practices using smart phones, computers, tablets, and even credit cards.  This session will review the latest on the why of hacking, the how of identity theft, and what you can to protect yourself and your family. Q&A will follow.

 

The Aging in Community SIG will meet in HC105 Wed., Oct. 5, 12:20-1:20 p.m.  Join us and share ideas for living in a safe friendly environment near Furman.  Questions?  Email Elaine Brummett.

 

Get ready for Cruisin’ with OLLI as we remember rock and roll, drive-ins, and hot wheels on Friday, October 28, 2-5 p.m. at the Herring Center. Jump back in time as and share time with other OLLI members rockin’ to the tunes of American Bandstand, check out the wheels of the Classic Car SIG members and enjoy some favorite foods of the times. No cost to attend; reservations are helpful. Purchase a food ticket in the OLLI office for $10 (mini-hamburger or hotdog, fries and your choice of a coke float or root beer float) if you like.

Have an idea for a new course? Want to enhance a current course? Grants of up to $2,000 are available to Ollie members to help cover the costs of course development. Grant applications can be found on the Olli website or by clicking here.  Applications should be submitted by March 1, 2017.

 

Anyone interested in being onstage or backstage is more than welcome to attend the OLLI Onstage SIG meeting Thursday, October 13 at 12:20 p.m., HC103.  No experience necessary and all are invited to come to the first meeting of the year. We are seeking input on what our next production will be!

TRAVEL WITH OLLI
The International Travel Committee is exploring the possibility offering an OLLI @ Furman trip with a Furman faculty member to visit the Battlefields of Western Europe in mid to late May, 2017.  In order to gauge potential participation, anyone interested is asked to contact Heidi Wright in the OLLI office. A meeting will be held soon with Furman faculty to overview the details of the trip.

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?  

Attention OLLI members interested in Furman’s annual Festival of Lessons and Carols (Sunday, December 11, 3 and 5 p.m.)!  Anyone (OLLI members, faculty, staff, etc.) who would like tickets to Lessons and Carols will need to go to the McAlister Auditorium Box Office at 9 a.m. Monday, October 3 to pick up your free tickets (4 per person). Due to a new policy, OLLI will not have any tickets to distribute.

 

Furman University’s Marching Band, The Paladin Regiment, will present its annual Band Extravaganza concert tonight, Friday, Sept. 30, at 8 p.m. in McAlister Auditorium. $5 tickets are available at the door.

 

Furman Theatre presents Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party at the Playhouse on Sat. Oct. 1, 8pm and Sun. Oct. 2, 3 p.m. OLLI member tickets are $12, and season tickets for OLLI are just $28. For more information, visit the website. Call 294-2125 with questions.

 

Furman Professor of Organ Dr. Charles Tompkins will present a faculty recital at Greenville’s First Baptist Church, Sunday, Oct. 2 at 3 p.m. A tribute to the late Sherwood A. Mobley, former Principal Timpanist and Executive Director of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra, the concert is free and open to the public.

 

American Enterprise Institute (AEI) scholar Dr. Dalibor Rohac will speak about “Brexit”, Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. in Hartness Pavilion. Find out more here.
