 Summer registration begins Tuesday, May 3 for everyone. The summer 2016 flyer is available on the website. No papers copies will be mailed, but they will be available in the office late next week. Pick one up, and a few more to share with friends and neighbors. Make sure you go online to try out your USER NAME AND PASSWORD so that login will be smooth when you are ready to register. Summer is a great time for people to try OLLI for the first time. Classes are just $30 and there is no membership requirement. A great time to encourage a friend to try out OLLI!

 

Tuesday, April 26 is DINS DAY at Furman (short for Paladins).  If you going to be at OLLI that day, wear your Furman purple and join in sharing the Furman spirit!

 

What do Linda Kelly, Linda Russ, John Dean, Sarah Fletcher, Hugh Hughes, Barbara Weiner, Jim D’Amato, and Sandra Ledbetter all have in common?  They are the cast of Writers’ Bloc, the original musical the new SIG OLLI Onstage is presenting Saturday, May 2, 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 3, 3 p.m. at the Furman Playhouse. Tickets are $6 and on sale in the OLLI office.  Note: Writer’s Bloc contains adult material.  Not suitable for children.

 

Applications are being accepted for Class 3 of Senior Leaders Greenville. Senior Leaders Greenville

(SLG) builds awareness of the essential role of seniors in the community and the critical issues they face, empowering participants to become advocates seeking better lives for seniors in Greenville, the Upstate, and beyond. SLG begins with an Orientation in August, concludes with a graduation luncheon in May, and includes nine day-long sessions with speakers, group activities, and exercises that will inform you on topics relevant to seniors. The cost is $350 and scholarships are available. Applications (due June 1) and more information are available on the OLLI Website and in the OLLI office. Questions? Celebrate another great year at OLLI at our annual Spring Luncheon on Tuesday, May 17 at the Younts Center.  Doors open at 11:30 for fellowship on the pavilion next door (cash bar available).   Enjoy a buffet lunch at noon including Grilled Salmon or Almond Crusted Chicken, Watercress Salad, Fresh Fruit, Garlic Mashed Potatoes and your choice of pie or cake for dessert!  Congratulate the new Volunteer of the Year, elect new OLLI Council members, and visit with OLLI friends old and new. OLLI and several community partners present “The Age of Love,” a documentary offering a funny and poignant look at the adventures of 30 Rochester, NY seniors who sign up for a first-of its-kind speed dating event for 70- to 90-year-olds.  Tuesday, May 3, at the Younts Center at Furman.  Doors open at 3 p.m.; screening begins at 3:30. Lunch and Learn Tuesdays, speakers from the community present a variety of interesting topics.  Free and open to the public, 12:30-1:20 p.m., HC110.  Bring your lunch and enjoy! April 26, Dr. Larry Gluck, Medical Director for the GHS cancer Center will be speaking on Cancer Treatment and Research at Greenville Hospital System.

Alison and Dona of Golden Years Moving will discuss the myriad services, from de-cluttering, coordinating movers and contractors to unpacking and setting up home, they provide. Eiho Baba (Associate Professor of Philosophy and Asian Studies), lectured on Confucianism and education at the OLLI class, “China Today: What Everybody Needs to Know About the World’s Most Populous Country.” His presentation at OLLI gave him the opportunity to do a TEDx Talk, which you can view here.

 

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?  

The Furman Theatre presents Arcadia by Tom Stoppard April 22-23 at 8 p.m. and April 24 at 3 p.m.  Tickets for OLLI members are $10.  Call 294-2125.

 

Want to see what the Theatre Arts students do in their classes all semester? Join them at Finalpalooza on Monday, April 25 at 7:00 p.m. at the Playhouse! You will get to see presentations by the Lighting Design, Movement for the Actor, and Acting II classes all in one night! FREE!

 

What’s GOING ON around Greenville?  

On Sunday, April 24, 3 p.m. Taylors First Baptist Church will be holding the Greenville Chorale spring concert – Sacred Song Fest. Come hear some of the most beautifully performed sacred music you will ever hear!  Bing and his 156 friends make music you will enjoy and remember. OLLI member price: $24. Boots and Bar-B-Q, Friday, April 29 at the Downtown Airport Hangar, benefitting the Greenville Chorale. Ticket prices are $35 single and $60 couple. There will be a live band for dancing, BBQ by Henrys, wine/beer, silent auction, and a bid on Conducting the Chorale. Call Chorale 864-235-1101 for reservations.

 

The Woodlands at Furman presents quilts by Ruth Pollow, OLLI member and instructor, May 3-31.  Join them for an opening reception Friday, May 6, 4-5 p.m.  The display includes works made by Ruth over the past 15 years, with selected pieces available for purchase.

 

The Free Electronics Recycling & Shredding event will be held at the TD Convention Center on Saturday, April 23, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. At this free event, citizens can dispose of unwanted electronics and have their sensitive documents destroyed and recycled in a secure manner. All paper to be shredded MUST be bagged or boxed, and each person is limited to three large trash bags or three small boxes of paper. Bags and boxes must be intact, with no rips or tears. Reusable bags, boxes or containers will be returned to you. Electronic items can include: televisions, computer monitors, keyboards, mice, wires, circuit boards, CPU’s, scanners, and printers.
