Winter brochures are available online and will be mailed today. Registration for Winter Term will begin November 17 for course package holders and November 19 for single course purchases. Please READY YOUR ACCOUNT by checking your Username and Password now so that login will be smooth when you register. If you need assistance with your log-in we’ll have someone in the computer lab (HC104) on Thursday, Nov. 5, 3-4:30 p.m. or Wednesday, Nov. 11, 12:15 – 1:15 p.m.

 

The OLLI Paladin Pass, your ticket to discounts and privileges across campus, will soon be available. If you enjoy $5 meals at the dining hall, use the Furman library, or play a few rounds at the Furman golf course, you’ll need one of these beginning in January. The Pass also entitles you to discounts at the Furman Fitness Center, restaurants in the student center, the campus bookstore, and more. We will not make these automatically for all members—please sign up in the office or email carson.ruffrage@furman.edu if you’d like to receive one.

 

Please help keep the Herring Center clean and green! Bringing your own mug or travel cup for coffee cuts down on use of paper coffee cups. Cups with lids cut down on spills. OLLI travel mugs are available in the OLLI office for $12, or you can bring one from home.

OLLI HAPPENINGS

At Lunch and Learn Tuesdays, speakers from the community will present a variety of interesting topics. Free and open to the public. 12:30-1:20 p.m., HC110. Bring your lunch and invite your friends. November 3 –Dr. Zoran Filipi, Executive Director of ICAR will present “Hybrid and Electric Vehicles.”

 

The Furman Theatre presents God of Carnage November 12-14 and 18-21 at 8 p.m. and November 15 at 3 p.m. OLLI member tickets are $10. Learn more about the play at a pre-show conversation on Thurs., Nov. 5 at 3:15 in HC110. Dr. Kristin Stultz Pressley, a Furman alum and adjunct professor, will discuss this Tony-Award winning play and give you a look at what’s in store with the Furman production.

 

Get your electronic devices working better!  The Computer Technology Committee presents a Computer/ Tablet/Phone Help Desk for members Mon., Nov. 9, 2-4 p.m., HC104 – First come, first served. Bring your device and our experienced team will try to help.  These sessions help with “quick fix” problems. Due to limited time, issues requiring lengthy attention will be directed for professional service.  Contact Dan Garvin.

 

Lewis and Clark Movie – Join the Lewis and Clark Expedition class at 10:45 on Wednesday, November 18 to view an alternate reality to the journey of the Corps of Discovery. We will view Hollywood’s version of the trip. Any similarity to the actual journey is coincidental, but makes for a fun time. All members are welcome.

 

Thanksgiving Potluck! We are thankful for our OLLI family and want to celebrate with you. Thursday, Nov. 26, we will gather at Trinity Presbyterian Church (Travelers Rest) at noon. Each attendee is asked to contribute $5. Let us know if you are coming so we have enough turkey. Go to Thanksgiving Pot Luck Sign Up or contact Heidi Wright  in the office for assistance signing up. Interested in Jamming with your Ukulele, Guitar, or whatever?  Join the OLLI Ukulele Special Interest Group on Fridays at 1:30 p.m., HC110, November 6 and 13. Bring your singing voice, instrument and music you know. We will set up in a circle and pass the mic.  If you are uncomfortable playing your own song, simply pass the mic.  If you have any questions, please contact Shelley Knee Johnson or phone 864-363-2014.

 

The Aging in Community SIG will meet Thursday, Nov. 5 at 12:15 p.m. in HC 102. Diana Miel will present the pros and cons of aging in place verses living in community, the philosophy and housing design.

 

The Travel SIG will gather from 6:30-8:30pm on Fri., Nov. 6 at the clubhouse of the Ravines at Camellia Ridge, 101 High Hat Circle. Please arrange to meet others at the Herring Lot and carpool. Coffee will be available, but bring your own bottle of wine if you want.

 

Out and About Singles has two exciting events coming up! Join them for a luncheon at Lemongrass Thai Restaurant on Friday, Nov. 13 at noon. Contact Carolyn Rice by Nov. 6 to RSVP! Uke Can Do Re Mi, OLLI’s very own Ukulele band, has a performance at the Woodlands on November 11 at 2:30pm. Please attend to show some OLLI support for our favorite uke band!

 

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

Furman’s annual Service of Lessons and Carols, presented by the Furman Chamber Chorus, is Sunday, Dec. 13 at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.  OLLI has a very limited number of free tickets that will be available beginning Mon., Nov. 2 at 8am.  Because of limited availability, members must physically come to the OLLI office to pick up tickets and may only get one ticket per member (first-come, first-served.) **If you received a ticket through another source, please leave the OLLI tickets for those who otherwise will not have a chance to attend. If you find that you can no longer use your ticket, please return it so that someone on the wait list may attend.

 

The High Noon lecture series continues. Talks are free and take place on Wednesdays at Noon in the Resource Room on the second floor of the Upcountry History Museum in downtown Greenville. November 4 enjoy “A Major League Legacy” presented by Mike Buddie, Furman Director of Athletics. For more information visit the museum website.

 

Join the Greenville Jewish Federation for a thought-provoking experience about the resiliency of the human spirit with a first-hand account from Mr. Robbie Waisman, a Holocaust survivor. The presentation will be held at the Younts Conference Center on Monday, Nov. 9 at 7pm. Free!

 

What’s GOING ON in and around Greenville?

The Peace Center will host a National Geographic LIVE! Presentation on Mon., Nov. 9, 11 a.m.-12 p.m. The show features Sam Abell and his amazing photographs that depict the images Lewis and Clark described on their historic expedition as Sam himself retraces their steps and documents it with his camera.
