Winter brochures are available online and in the office. Please take extra brochures to share with friends, neighbors, and places you visit around town. YOU are our best advertising!

 

Registration for Winter Term will begin November 17 for course package holders and November 19 for single course purchases. Please READY YOUR ACCOUNT by checking your Username and Password now so that login will be smooth when you register. If you need assistance with your log-in, stop by the computer lab (HC104) on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 12:15 – 1:15 p.m.

 

Sign up now for the OLLI Thanksgiving Potluck on Thursday, Nov. 26! Our location this year is a very nice and warm setting in the social hall of Trinity Presbyterian Church, just minutes away from Furman.  Each attendee is asked to contribute $5. Driving directions will be furnished.  We will gather at noon. Go to Thanksgiving Pot Luck Sign Up or contact Heidi Wright for assistance signing up. Deadline for sign up is Thurs., Nov. 19 at 4 p.m.

 

The Social Committee would like to thank all of the authors and artists that participated in Fall for OLLI last Friday. Thanks to all who attended and brought your hearty hors d’oeuvres and to the office staff for their support. Hats off to the entire social committee for their help in making it a successful event and to Lois Parker who had the wonderful idea and chaired the event! We look forward to more fun times together in the future.

OLLI HAPPENINGS

At Lunch and Learn Tuesdays, speakers from the community will present a variety of interesting topics. Free and open to the public. 12:30-1:20 p.m., HC110. Bring your lunch and invite your friends. November 10 –Joseph McMillan, President of Junk Matters will present “Reuse, Reduce, Recycle.”

 

The OLLI Paladin Pass is your ticket to discounts and privileges on campus. If you enjoy $5 meals at the dining hall, use the library, or play a few rounds at Furman’s golf course, you’ll need one beginning in January. It also entitles you to discounts at the Fitness Center, the bookstore and restaurants in the student center, and more. We will not make these automatically for all members—sign up in the office or email Carson Ruffrage.

 

Get your electronic devices working better!  The Computer Technology Committee presents a Computer/ Tablet/Phone Help Desk for members Mon., Nov. 9, 2-4 p.m., HC104 – First come, first served. Bring your device and our experienced team will try to help.  These sessions help with “quick fix” problems. Due to limited time, issues requiring lengthy attention will be directed for professional service.  Contact Dan Garvin.

 

Lewis and Clark Movie – Join the Lewis and Clark Expedition class at 10:45 on Wednesday, November 18 to view an alternate reality to the journey of the Corps of Discovery. We will view Hollywood’s version of the trip. Any similarity to the actual journey is coincidental, but makes for a fun time. All members are welcome.

 

The Travel SIG will gather Fri., Nov. 6, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the clubhouse of the Ravines, 101 High Hat Circle. Please arrange to carpool from the Herring Lot. Coffee provided, bring your own bottle of wine if you want.

Interested in Jamming with your Ukulele, Guitar, or whatever?  Join the OLLI Ukulele SIG on Fridays at 1:30 p.m., HC110, November 6 and 13. Bring your singing voice, instrument and music you know. We will set up in a circle and pass the mic or pass if you like. Questions, contact Shelley Knee Johnson or phone 864-363-2014. Uke Can Do Re Mi, OLLI’s very own Ukulele band, has a performance at the Woodlands on Nov. 11 at 2:30pm. Come show some OLLI support for our favorite uke band!

 

Out and About Singles has two exciting events coming up! Fri., Nov. 13 at Noon: lunch at Lemongrass Thai Restaurant. Contact Carolyn Rice by Nov. 6 to RSVP. Wed., Nov. 18, travel to Columbia to view the Georgia O’Keefe exhibit at the Columbia Museum. Contact Sue Miller for details and to reserve.

 

The final play in the 2015 RSC series is William Shakespeare’s Henry V. See it Fri., Nov. 20 at 4pm and Sat., Nov. 21 at 7pm in the Burgiss Theatre in Trone Student Center. Buy your tickets for only $16 in the OLLI office. On Thursday November 12, Dennis Tavernetti will present a Bonus Lunch and Learn about Henry V from 12:30 to 1:15 in room H004 to prepare for this marvelous production.

 

Believe it or not, it’s almost time to deck the halls! Help decorate the OLLI Tree on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 10 a.m. Bring a treat to share and enjoy music to get into the spirit as you get Manly Lobby ready for the holidays.

Our annual Christmas Caroling will be on Thurs, Dec. 3 at Heartland Healthcare Center of Greenville East. We’ll meet at OLLI for rehearsal at 1 p.m., carpool to Heartland and perform 3:15-4:15p.m., starting in the dining room and then singing in the halls. This has been enjoyable and gratifying event for several years, and we welcome former and new singers. Gloria Larkin leads the singing and Connie Kane-Maguire helps organize.

Join OLLI friends, wear purple and cheer on the Furman Men’s Basketball Team on OLLI Night! Furman vs. Liberty on Tuesday, December 8 at 7 p.m. at Timmons Arena.   Tickets are just $10 in the OLLI office.

 

What’s GOING ON at Furman University?

We have a few more tickets for Furman’s annual Service of Lessons and Carols on Sun., Dec. 13, 5 p.m.  Come to the OLLI office to pick up–one ticket per member (first-come, first-served). **If you received a ticket through another source, please leave the OLLI tickets for those who will not have a chance to attend. If you find that you can no longer use your ticket, please return it so that someone on the wait list may attend.

 

The Furman Theatre presents God of Carnage November 12-14 and 18-21 at 8 p.m. and November 15 at 3 p.m. OLLI member tickets are $10.

 

Join the Greenville Jewish Federation for a first-hand account from Mr. Robbie Waisman, a Holocaust survivor. The presentation will be held at the Younts Conference Center on Monday, Nov. 9 at 7pm. Free!

 

The High Noon lecture series continues. Talks are free and take place on Wednesdays at Noon in the Resource Room on the second floor of the Upcountry History Museum in downtown Greenville. November 11 enjoy “America and the Holocaust” presented by Dr. Diane Vecchio, Furman Professor of History. For more information visit the museum website.

 

The Furman Library presents The Agony of Vietnam: A Discussion with Two Combat Veterans Thursday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Trone Student Center, Watkins Room. Bud Alley and Jim Lawrence will discuss their books and experiences during one of the most violent clashes in the Vietnam War.
