OLLI HAPPENINGS

Giving Back – Luckily, we at OLLI are very fortunate!  There are those in our community who are not nearly as fortunate.  Want to share your good fortune?  Why not donate to the Harvest Hope Food Bank Drive? Harvest Hope Food Bank supplies 90+ agencies with food, personal care items and baby formula and diapers. The food bank serves the entire Upstate and has provided food to thousands of families since its inception. Bring some non-perishable items to the Back to OLLI Reception on September 10 or to the collection box during the first week of class.  Items will be collected September 10-18.  Your donations will be greatly appreciated. Thanks to Lynne Barrett for coordinating the food drive.

 

The OLLI office needs YOU! We are looking for office volunteers to help out during the following hours: Tuesdays 8:30 – 10:30 a.m.; Thursdays 12 noon – 3 p.m. No specific skills are necessary–just a friendly face! Please contact Heidi Wright in the OLLI office if you are interested in lending a hand.

 

A planning meeting for the production of WRITERS’ BLOC, a musical comedy about a group of aspiring writers, will be held on Tuesday, September 15, at 3:15 p.m. in Room HC103.  Can you sing? Act? Build scenery? Just curious about musical theatre?  Whether or not you attended the preliminary meeting in July, please come to this one. We’ll firm up plans, entertain suggestions, decide who wants to do what. There are jobs for everyone!  Need more info: Contact Jim Damato or Ellyn Bache.

Are you interested in travel? Whether you’re a veteran globetrotter or planning your first trip, join us for an opportunity to share your experiences, ask questions or maybe get some ideas for new places to visit and how to get there. We hope that you have had a chance to enjoy the first OLLI@Furman Photography Showcase that is now in the Crabtree Room of the Herring Center.  We are pleased to announce that the second exhibition will run October 17 to January 4, 2016.  If you are an OLLI member or staff and wish to participate send your name, the title of your artwork, email address, and a digital copy (medium sized JPEG – 2048 pixels on the long side) of your art to furmanolliphoto@gmail.com.  Submissions are due no later than September 21. A copy of the guidelines can be picked up at the OLLI office or by request to furmanolliphoto@gmail.com.

Furman University’s Riley Institute and Political Science Department invite you to the fifth annual Constitution Day, will take place on Thursday, September 17 at 4:00 p.m. in the Watkins Room of Trone Student Center. This year we are examining the Fourth amendment within the context of traffic stops and other encounters between law enforcement and members of the public.  We are pleased to have Victoria Middleton, executive director of the South Carolina ACLU, coming to speak.  Furman’s own Teresa Cosby will provide an opening on “What does the Fourth Amendment Protect,” Don Aiesi will respond to Dr. Middleton, and Glen Halva-Neubauer will be the moderator for the program. Free and open to the public.

 

Furman’s Pauper Players presents You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown on September 16, 17, and 18 at 7:30 in McAlister Auditorium. Tickets are $10. Tickets can be purchased at the door or reserved in advance by contacting Nicole Sanford. The entire cast, production team, and orchestra is made up entirely of students.

 

The Upcountry History Museum – Furman University, located at 540 Buncombe Street, Greenville, features a special exhibit Sept. 5 – Jan. 31 in partnership with the U.S. Navy Art Museum and the Naval History & Heritage Command, The Forgotten War: Korea 1950-1953 commemorates the service, sacrifice, and great contributions of those who fought in Korea. What’s GOING ON in and around Greenville?

Mill Town Players presents Ring of Fire. The music and story of Johnny Cash will run for three weekends, September 4 – 20. A live band along with excellent singers and actors will entertain you at the Historic Pelzer Auditorium, 214 Lebby Street, Pelzer, SC, 29669. Go to milltownplayers.org for information and to order tickets, $8 for seniors (sixty-five and older), $10 for younger adults, and $7 for students (eighteen years and younger).  The Mill Town Players mission is to provide you with live, affordable, and quality entertainment.

 

The Consortium of the Upstate South Carolina History features traveling exhibit HOMETOWN TEAMS: HOW SPORTS SHAPE AMERICA organized by the Smithsonian Institute and coming to Slater Hall Community Center (5 Whitney Street, Slater, SC 29661). September 12th through October 25th. Hours: Tuesday, 10:00-4:00; Thursday 12:00-8:00; Saturday 10:00-4:00; Sunday 1:00-5:00.

 

The Warehouse Theatre presents The Rocky Horror Show September 18-October 31. This cult classic is full of laughs, chills and thrills. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at the box office or on the website.
