Furman or Hogwarts?

We’ve all read the books, seen the movies, or been chastised for not doing the first two. Either way, Harry Potter is one of the cornerstones of our generation’s literature and entertainment. With that said, it is hard not to notice the similarities between Hogwarts and Furman University. Here are just a few that I have come up with:

  1. Forget broomsticks; bikes are most Furman students’ choice of transportation. While most of us choose to stick with the Swamp Rabbit Trail, the most elite of us compete on the Furman cycling team.
  2. Where Hogwarts has the Chamber of Secrets, Furman has Judson 500. If you ask any upperclassmen student about the mysterious J5, they will probably all have a different story to tell. Take me out for coffee and I’ll give you the official scoop 😉
  3. While robes may not be the uniform choice of students at Furman, we do have a tendency to dress in similar attire: bean boots, leggings, and large t-shirts are staple items for most of the women on campus, while many of the men go forSnowman pic bean boots (can’t you tell that we live in the south?), button-up shirts, and khakis. On days with nicer weather, I can guarantee you that Sperrys, Jack Rogers, chino shorts, and Lilly Pulitzer will be involved.
  4. We may not have Professor Snape, but our chemistry department puts Hogwarts’ potions class to shame! With amazing faculty and top-notch labs, who needs a love potion when you can fall in love with the never-ending research that takes place within the halls of the science building?
  5. Sororities and fraternities are like Hogwarts’ houses… except we don’t hate each other. In fact, we get along and we’re even (*gasp*) friends with each other! Who would have thought?
  6. Like Hogwarts, Furman does not hesitate to protect its students during dangerous times, such as this year’s “Snowpocalypse”. I know what you’re thinking: how in the world do a few inches of snow even compare to rampaging Basilisks and Death Eater attacks? Trust me when I say that there is nothing more terrifying than southerners attempting to drive through ice and snow.
  7. Sure, Harry Potter may have defeated Voldemort, but did he single-handedly demolish this snowman? I don’t think so.
