MedEx Week 2

image1-3Wow! It’s hard to believe that MedEx Academy 2015 is over halfway over! Week two was equally exciting as the first, complete with medical ethics lectures and discussion with Dr. Epright, therapy shadowing, academic advising with Dr. Banisaukas, and several healthcare career speakers. Here are a couple of my favorite parts!

We began the week with therapy shadowing. Two other MedEx students and I were sent to shadow GHS Prosthetics and Orthotics… which was basically the coolest experience EVER! Not only did we get to check out the workshop- in which their prosthetic and orthotic devices are built- as well as meet and interact with patients, but we were also able to have some pretty close encounters with “cheetah feet”… I’ll let this picture give you the idea!

Academic advising with Dr. Banisaukas, a chemistry professor and pre-med advisor here at Furman, was extremely helpful (as usual). He helped me plan out the next three years of my academic schedule at Furman, as well as explained what I can do to be more competitive on my medical school applications. I recommend that all pre-med students at Furman (including incoming freshmen) meet with Dr. Banisaukas early on… It’s a great way to get on top of pre-med courses and healthcare clubs and activities, such as AED and FUMMO (Furman University Medical Missions Organization). Also… he’s a pretty cool person to talk to!
