7 Tips for Having a Happy Interview

INTERVIEWS. Not only are they stressful and intimidating, but they are also something that we will experience time and time again. Whether they are for school admission, an extracurricular program, or a job position, interviews all have one thing in common: they are simply a means by which someone may get to know the real you. Having taken part in many an interview- especially during my senior year of high school- I have put together a list of key ingredients for the perfect interview recipe-for-success, and they are as follows:
1. Dress professionally, but be sure to show your personality! My go-to interview outfit consists of a neutral-colored blazer, a fun-colored skirt, and a statement necklace. Gentlemen, it never hurts to wear a button-down, and please DO NOT wear cargo shorts!
2. Walk into the room with a smile on your face. Not only will it help you to relax and think positive thoughts, but it will also show the person giving the interview that you are confident and happy to be there!
3. Give the interviewer a good, firm handshake. It’s their first impression of you, and you want for them to know that you mean business!
4. Don’t feel bad about “bragging”. This is your time to tell them about all of your accomplishments so that they have a clear picture of what you have to offer.
5. Try to answer all of their questions with complete honesty! Do not make stuff up; they will definitely be able tell whether or not you really did sing for the President or teach English in South America over the summer.
6. Ask the interviewer questions. They understand that you are not all knowing, and they would love to tell you more about the position of which you are applying for. Make this a learning experience for yourself!
7. BE YOURSELF. You’ve had years of practice, so you’ve probably mastered it by now!
