Democrats “concerned” and “jittery?” The outcome of “The CNN Effect”

The role the media has played in the health care debate has been monumental.
Why has health care become a topic of obsession in our society? What might our society be focusing on instead if the media had not put such emphasis on the debate of the health care plan?
The answer lies within the media and their role as society’s “agenda-setters.”
Media shapes and molds the public opinion of what is important or newsworthy. Through the media’s role as the “gatekeepers,” mass media holds the power to set the agenda of our nation’s current concerns.
Prior to recent legislation, media covered the health care debate in a positive light. In fact, this time three years ago, the coverage of the debate began, as the media optimistically praised Obama’s call for change.
As a result of vivid coverage from influential news stations, the mass media trend known as the “CNN Effect,” caused a ripple effect where media stations across the nation focused their attention on this issue.
Recently, however, not all coverage of the debate has been set in the same one-sided optimistic light.
CNN has covered the fear of Republicans as they fight back to counter the bill. A CNN article claims that “Part of the GOP pledge [is] to use every parliamentary tool available to undermine the measure.”
Not only has the media recently covered the fear of Republican leaders, but the worry of Democrats defending the bill has been exposed as well. The same article states that, “Democrats have acknowledged they are concerned that the Republicans may succeed in changing the carefully balanced package.”
According to another article posted by the CNN Wire Staff, “Obama’s upcoming speech is part of a White House plan to begin aggressively selling the benefits of his health care overhaul and give some political cover to Democratic lawmakers jittery about their political futures.”
While stations such as CNN once praised Obama’s health care plan and constantly spoke of the support of the Democratic party, now words such as “jittery” or “concerned” are being used to describe the Democratic party.
Through the use of influential stations such as CNN covering the other side of the debate and concern of politicians, stations across the nation have shifted their focus to the cons of the health care bill.
Thanks to the CNN Effect, now both sides of the debate are being equally publicized.
